Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

That's dumb.

Based on what was said in the article, It looks like their rational is to strengthen the overall CTV "brand" :

“In today’s crowded media landscape, it’s essential for our services to have the same scale and brand ubiquity as our international competitors,” said Randy Lennox, President, Bell Media. “As a result we’re focusing and amplifying CTV so that it is stronger than ever.”

“The launch of this multi-genre, next generation digital super hub instantly makes our expansive portfolio easy to find through one point of entry,” said Mike Cosentino, President, Programming and Content. “It’s an enormously powerful collection of CTV-branded services, live and on-demand, encompassing hit programming from every genre.”

Apparently Lower Decks is 100% canon.

I suspect fans will debate this for all eternity like they do ST: The Animated Series and the Marvel Universe Netflix and TV shows.

Not that it really matters as long as it's enjoyable, right?
The impression I'm getting is that it will take the universe seriously, but it'll just have funny characters and situations. So it's not going to be a parody or anything like it, it'll just be a comedy that happens to take place in the Star Trek universe.

Just thought of this. Q appearing in the series makes perfect sense. Q's rascal-like behaviour would probably fit the tone of the show like a glove. I definitely can see allot of comedic opportunities. Add the fact you can still make Q look young since it's animation AND to boot- John de Lancie is an accomplished voice actor himself.

That didn't even occur to me, but that would be great. Being animated means they could get even crazier than usual with the stuff he does to the characters.

Star Trek is not meant to be enjoyed! Star Trek only has merit when it is canonical and consistent with said canonical structure.

Oh, right. Yeah, I think I see the problem with the franchise now.

Only when it's canonical, consistent, and....GOOD.

Those shouldn't be requirements to enjoy something.

Really? I would say identity politics shouldn't be a requirement to enjoy something and yet I keep coming across people who put that first. Point being that you can't dictate what should or shouldn't be a requirement to enjoy something.

Agreed. I've always found his VA work as Discord in MLP to be very well done.

Some words from showrunner Mike McMahan.

"My favorite thing about Star Trek is the B stories... Yeah, Picard is being tortured for information, great, love that story. But then Data accidentally locked himself in a bathroom. That's what I'm there for." -

"#StarTrekLowerDecks takes place on the U.S.S. Cerritos... the speciality of the Cerritos is second contact... Second contact, you're showing up to the planet, you're finding all the good places to eat... You're like the Yelp of Starfleet." -

I suspect this show will be a lot like the TNG S8 that Mike McMahan did, initially as a Twitter account and eventually as a book that was the "episode guide" for the "season." Hell, I wouldn't be shocked if a few of those plotlines did get adapted for the show. The episode "The Lowest Deck" seems tailor-made for this show.

And there absolutely has to be Space Dolphins. This is non-negotiable, and my viewing is contingent upon this factor. Space Dolphins.

Maybe since Picard is going to have appearances by TNG and VOY characters, we could get one or two DS9 characters in this.
