Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

It's ok, I just don't get why ships are so flat now. I guess it's to distinguish from the Enterprise look, but the modular design felt really practical and was quite unique to the look of Federation ships.

Bryan Fuller decreed it. Though why they’re still listening to his words I dunno

Yeah, I hate that trend. Ever since the end of TNG (that is, like, 30 years in real life!), Star Trek ships are getting flatter and flatter...

From the Voyager to the Ent-E abolishing the necks, to the Defiant and NX-01 being absolute 2D-designs.... Ugh.

Honestly, that was the one amazing thing about the JJprise - finally having height again! - and the one thing I like about the Discovery. It looks like a real, 3D thing again, instead of a painting that looks only good from a 3/4-look from above...

How many new Starfleet ships have we seen since BotBS? The Enterprise, the Hiawatha, the fuzzy tugs that may or may not have been FJ-style Connie kit-bashes? Plus the two new comics ships, the Sommerville here, and the Dorothy Garrod. That's about fifty-fifty for less-flat ships (though I'm tempted to say the trend started with ST09 reserving the "starship" configuration of saucer with engineering below and behind, and then two nacelles above and behind, for the Enterprise).

Yeah, the beauty of the original Enterprise was the weird, weightless impossibility of the design. There's no way it could work in Earth's gravity, so it didn't need to look streamlined.

I do like the overall grace and weirdness of Ryan Church's design, even if certain details didn't work for me.

I absolutely love that front-facing shot of the Beyond Refit 1701 Enterprise coming through the asteroid / debris field!

Simply beautiful as a neck shot of the starship - which in the example of the Beyond Refit is longer / extended even more so than the 09 (pre-Refit) 1701.

:)

We all know it will actually be Eaglemoss' very first Firefly ship release. (Technically true!)

Excited to see that the Lakul is a reality at long last. I'll probably get the Karemma ship as well. (Still holding out hope for the Bajoran scout and Degra's ship).

I gotta say, I'm getting kinda tired of concept ships. I'm really happy with the "Probert" Enterprise-C, but a lot of these didn't make the cut as designs for a "hero" ship for a reason. I don't mean to complain, but there's still ships I'd give priority to over these barely-canon background ships.

this.

i understand the impetus for doing these, but they’re taking up valuable real estate in the collection for ships that actually appeared on screen. it’s silly we’re this far into the collection and just now seeing the orion interceptor or son’a ships, and the yridian ship is still MIA.

Well the Son’a ones I understand since the models to those were lost. Would have been harder to make from scratch.
