Spock was on a personal mission with major implications.
He went for medical assistance to verify whether he was delusional or not, a logical choice considering what he was dealing with. When he was certain he was not delusional, he proceeded on to the next phase of what was his personal mission.

"a preestablished and often self-imposed objective or purpose"

You can argue with Miriam Webster, if you wish to alter the language.

So what was the mission then? Mumbling to himself in his parents' personal catacombs? That's where Michael found him!

Presumably you watched the same episodes I did. I'm not going to narrate them for you.

Well, then I can tell you, there was no mission. Plus you don't get killed by moving back and forth in a cave while uttering nonsense... or at least you shouldn't. So the "In the event of my death" preliminary was way superfluous.

But was he on a mission from God?

Asking for friends.

I liked season 1 a lot right from the start, though it might be different of course from the older ST series. There were actually enough ST-moments and ST-feeling in the show for me (just take the last episode for example, it's completely based on ST philosophy) and I also found the characters very interesting.

When season 2 started, I thought it's even better for the first five or six episodes. It felt all in all a bit "lighter" and more positive, there was more exploration etc. and each episode, despite being connected to the main arc, told its own story so that you could also regard them, with the main plot in mind, as stand-alone-episodes. This all means that the season fulfilled what they had promised about it in the first place and it brought back the Star Trek elements many viewers missed in season 1 - yeah, but actually only for the first half. Don't get it twisted: I still liked the second half of season 2 and I like the season in its entirety. But for me, something changed in the second half. The episodes didn't feel as episodic anymore as before and seemed to only move forward the main arc. And this one is also a bit of a problem for me: I didn't like the outcome, the big twist about the Red Angel too much. Right from the start, I was so excited about the solution to this riddle, I imagined the Red Angel to be some kind of unknown species, or, even better, some character from the older ST shows, which are chronologically set after DSC. As weird as this might sound, I really had thoughts like "maybe the Red Angel is Picard, we see Patrick Stewart in the very last episode and they establish a connection to the upcoming show". I mean, not that I really thought that exactly this would happen, but I was sure that something or someone really special and surprising is hiding behind the Red Angel and each week I was curious about more details. Well, and then it turned out to be a piece of technology. Hmm...

All in all, for me personally season 2 started extremely strong and as I said, overall I still liked it. But in the end I feel that season 1, despite maybe having less classic ST-feeling in all, was the more "consequent" season. That's why I like it better.

Do you call anything a mission?
Yes. I do. I also often let people know what to do in case they can't find me if I'm going out or doing something that involves a larger amount of risk, i.e. a hike, going logging, etc.

Spock clearly knew there was some personal risk involved with his investigation and took steps to address all outcomes. You know, it's logical.

There is very little difference between the 2 seasons on the main problem of the show: too much surface over substance.
It culminates with the "I LOVE MATH!" shitfest. Without earning it, they cheered what great nerds they are.

This has nothing to do with TNG and nostalgia. Being stupid is ageless, 2019 does not have to be stupid.
In fact, the Picard series' main weakness appears to be that it might rely a lot on old tired actors.

Well, we'll, clearly, never agree on that.

Well, they never earn the nerd trophy, in all of Star Trek everything "math-like" has always been so bullshitty that it would never fool an actual nerd for more than a millisecond!!

Since neither of us work for Starfleet or deal with the kind of decisions they do I'm going to go with Yes, we'll never agree.

People in dangerous jobs write letters home or to family all the time. It's a bit of a trope, really, especially in military dramas. The fact that Spock did it strikes me as neither odd nor illogical.
