The Last Jedi - Actually Widely Hated?

It's called a "redeeming quality" when TLJ does it.
Since when? This is the most confusing non sequitur I have seen a while, and I am guilty of many! :wtf:
1. Yes, it was poor leadership. That's kind of the point.

2. It's Star Wars. Common sense has no business here. Try and unravel whatever the hell the plan to rescue Han was in ROTJ and you'll see what I mean.

3. Disagree, it was a fun story.
Agree on all points. Though, I think Holdo is not as poor of a leader as she is constantly argued about.

Also, funny you mentioned Han's rescue plan. Yeah, that doesn't make sense under scrutiny.

I certainly won't defend the weakest act of the weakest OT Episode in terms of plot cohesion. But at least RotJ front-loaded its worst fails, whereas TLJ evenly sprinkled its crappy moments across a much longer runtime.

You’re going to have to convince me they were crappy moments. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire movie.

It's funny how there are such strongly differing opinions about TLJ. I quite enjoyed it, while acknowledging it's flawed in places. But for me it's the best of the new trilogy so far. It seems people either love it or hate it. There doesn't seem to be much in between.

I seem to remember that my friends and I were pretty much the same way when we first saw Empire Strikes Back all those years ago. I know I hated it until I’d seen it a few times.

The in between people don't post online. They watch and enjoy.

...you mean like what I'm doing with this thread? :p

BTW, does anyone need a refill on their popcorn? I have plenty!

I've never gotten a satisfactory answer to how such an unpopular movie that everyone hates can make $1.3 billion at the box office and $87.8 million in home video sales.

The highest grossing movie of 2017, wasn't it? While not up to TFA's $2-point-something billion, that's still nothing to sneeze at.

No doubt those who are critical of the movie will offer some reasonable explanation.

Personally, I could have done without the goofy phone call humor toward the beginning, and I felt that some parts of the movie dragged more than they should. But overall I enjoyed it.

Kor

One thing I noticed in the Poe Dameron comic, is even there he seems to talk a lot more like a modern person than a lot of the other Star Wars characters, so in a way the phone call thing is fairly consistent with his character.

Exactly.

No matter how many times I've pointed this out, I've never gotten a good answer. Still waiting. ;)

No Star Wars movie is perfect. Even the vaunted Empire Strikes Back has some flaws. But I've enjoyed all of them in some form or another. And that's all that matters.

Personal enjoyment is all that matters. I don't care if a film is widely hated. Some of my favorite films and stores are short ones, or less popular ones, who whatnot. I'm often surprised that people either A). haven't heard of it or B). found it lacking (boring/irritating/etc.).

Now, I love discussing films and hearing people describe their shortfalls is almost as entertaining. But, for me, personally, if a film is a financial success then I'm going to guess people were entertained by it. And that's all that matters.

If you haven't grokked them by now, there may not be much hope for you. At least you're not a Bayformers fan.

... Wait, are you a Bayformers fan?! :p

Straw man formulating skill level: adequate, if uninspired. ;)

Is that really necessary? Why not just list moments you don't agree with in the film or think were "crappy." I certainly think the Poe call, while kind of funny, was also kind of crappy. Same with the introductory scene with DJ.

Simple.

But its not a strawman.

I'm suggesting the initial thesis of this thread which is that its "widely hated" is incorrect. A movie doesn't make that much money if it many hate it, I don't care which franchise it is. If it were that bad, people would pick up on negative word of mouth and just choose to skip it. I'm not saying people can't hate TLJ. I'm not even suggesting that some people don't have some fair gripes. I'm just saying that you don't make that much money if it at least some like it, and probably a decent amount of people when it comes down to it.

It's Star Wars. What would it take to keep you from the theater for a Star Wars movie? Not something that anyone would say in my case, that's for sure. Thus, box office for such a movie doesn't have much to do with quality.
