I suspect the ridges arent a genetic trait but rather a body modification

Considering the Romulans we saw in Trek XI were from post-Nemesis 24th century anyway, isn't that to be expected?

Nero and his crew were not from the Kelvin timeline. They were from the prime timeline post-Nemesis. And why would you think the ridges are body modifications?

Ridged and ridgeless can exist side by side. Take note Klingons.

I swear, sometimes it’s like TOS never happened. Ridgeless Romulans are the original style.

We're in TNG era. TNG style makes sense to continue forward with.

Additionally, it’s like some fans can not or will not process the mechanics of the creation of the Kelvinverse and assign everything they don’t like to it (not necessarily saying that OP is doing that, just thinking about some recent discussions here).

Kelvin universe is the punching bag of the Star Trek world. Sad but true :(

In the lap of squalor I assure you.
Once upon a time my explanation for ridges was a deformity from over using Cloaking Devices.

I could be wrong, but I believe that when ST09 was being made, they explained away the Romulan redesign by saying that the forehead ridges on Berman-era Romulans were not bone, but keloid scars caused by some ritualistic branding/cutting.

well personally I think TNG made a mistake by changing the look of the romulans, and the ridgeless romulans are canon as well via TOS and ST09, so I like to think that it's a ritualistic body mod or something to explain the differences.

You might be right but even if it's right, it sounds wrong. That doesn't sound like TNG/DS9 Romulans. They're too passive-aggressive to be that overtly barbaric.

Do you also think the post-TOS Klingons (and ENT Klingons for that matter) decided to all make ritualistic body mods to themselves as well?

So maybe the Romulans contracted the virus too.

Voluntarily, not because of the augment virus?
