THE ORVILLE Season Three...

Disney/Fox is still keeping the show since they own hold a majority of Hulu, they're just moving it.

Oh yeah, I know it dealt with some pretty dark stuff, but I was under the impression that it was still more or less considered a teen show.
 
This sucks. I guess I won't see it for a while. I like The Orville very much but not enough to subscribe to Hulu.

Disney doesn't own the Fox network but now owns 70% of Hulu, so this move makes sense for them..
 
I have a feelings with the ratings it was Hulu or nothing.........I wonder if the budget will remain at a current level or we will start seeing shots recycled more.

And Comcast ceded their creative control in a deal with Disney where they will buy their 30% ownership for an already agreed to amount of money by 2024 for their 30% creative control now. So Disney might still technically only own 70% of Hulu, but they're 100% in control of it as of a couple months ago.

Given that Comcast was the one pushing for ads, and that Comcast is now set to launch their own $12-per-month-but-still-infuriatingly-filled-with-ads streaming service in 2020, I wouldn't be surprised if the days are numbered for Hulu's moronic ads. They made a ton of sense back when Hulu was free. They don't make sense if you're already paying for it. Get over yourself Comcast!

There's many good shows on Hulu. I've pretty much just watched 3 shows on Hulu. At least they have a more impressive library than CBS All Access at this point.
 
Why can't Fox it just air the year after if it is too late for their 2020 schedule?

I have a feeling this is less an issue of FOX not having room on its schedule for a 13 episode a season series and more Disney thinking that the series would have a longer life on Hulu than on FOX. Better to make the move now while the series is still in active production than have FOX cancel it after Season 3 airs and scramble to try to keep the cast and crew under contract and the sets standing.

If they lost several cast members to pilot and/or series commitments during a period of uncertainty, why bring it back for Season 4? This is a smart move on Disney's part in the long run.
 
Man, late 2020? That sucks.

But I like the move to Hulu. No network censorship. I'll sign up for that.

For me in Germany it does not make any difference anyway, but it has been said that Fox is still producing the show. So why produce it and not air it? That's what I don't get. It did air on Hulu before.

There are some folks complaining who can't get Hulu because their internet is not strong enough. It would make them happy could they still see it, albeit a bit later.

I get what you are saying that we hopefully have to be less concerned about cancelling now, and they have more freedom with episode lengths etc. Plus we won't have three weeks breaks in airing.

I doubt it sees anything past season 3..........it had dropped from 8 million to about 2.5 on FOX. I was actually shocked it got a 3rd season, some shows with more viewers got the axe.

It was renewed by the FOX network (which, along with FOX News and FOX Sports is still owned by the Murdochs), but it's produced by 20th Century Fox Television (which is now owned by Disney).

Disney probably saw the writing on the wall that FOX probably won't renew it again for Season 4, so they decided to just air it themselves since they're already producing it. I'm sure they reimbursed FOX/the Murdochs if they spent any money yet on Season 3. They're Disney. The have all the money.

Also, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the FOX network now has to pay steep licensing fees to air any 100% Disney-produced series. Not only are they saving money by not airing The Orville, but the article speculates that the other three series airing on FOX that are 100% produced by Disney with no other production partners (The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob's Burgers) could be moving to other Disney owned outlets in the near future due to those steep licensing fees.

They're basically pulling the classic Disney strong arm so that the Murdoch's are forced to give up their three most popular and lucrative scripted series. I'm not of fan of Bob Iger's strong arm tactics, but I'll shed zero tears about it happening to Rupert Murdoch and his sons. FOX has a history of not liking those types of fees either. It was licensing fees ultimately that killed Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, not ratings.

We're about to enter the era of a 100% Disney controlled Hulu being bundled with the highly anticipated Disney+ (which itself will reportedly cost just $6-7 per month). Disney's about to make a fuck ton of money even for them. I don't think they're worried about ratings. As long as they don't balloon their budget, they should be fine.

Season 3 of THE ORVILLE was one of the upcoming shows that would get a big tax break during production. That was listed long before it got renewed, and I think it was a big factor in them getting renewed.

I'm glad that it will mean a likely longer life for the show, but I hate that it will be on Hulu. I don't have it, and I'll likely have to wait until most of the season is over and binge it at the end, like I do with STAR TREK: DISCOVERY.
 
I wonder if some of this is SM wanting to push the boundaries a little more than broadcast tv would allow?
