Spoilers Combined Star Trek SDCC Coverage thread (potential Disco S2 spoilers)

Then maybe, something to do with the engram transfer corrupted B4 and made him evil like Lore, which is why he got disassmbled in the first place. Maybe B4 was responsible for the red matter that destroyed Romulus. So, they're *very* hesitant to reassemble and reactivate him. But they know they have to in order to try and solve the mystery.

If you don't want TNG appearances in this show, then you're obviously not the target demographic. As someone who considers TNG to be my favorite trek show, the more appearances the better. I'm excited for the show because of Picard and his history, not the boring looking new characters.
Obviously. ..how dare I want original stories and characters that expand upon the lore of the world of Trek... ?

And with one small detail (Picard leaving the E-E in 2381) that’s the novelverse effectively wiped out, as it has Picard still in command as of 2386.

Not sure about STO but guessing it’ll be able to work around it a bit easier. Countdown is out too since it had Picard as an ambassador in 2387 (was never a big fan of Countdown anyway).
Interesting thing about STO is: They HAVE a storyline where the Romulans have been trying to integrate and use Borg technology in their ships to get a 'leg up' on the other Star Empires since the destruction of Romulus (and this was part of the game since 2010* -- so it seems the producers may have thought that was an interesting angle and ran with it for the Picard series.

I *am* more interested in new characters and moving the franchise forward in a meaningful way, with Picard as the backbone, but I also feel if they're going to include old characters then it needs to be meaningful and in service to the new story, not just cameos. The risk of going "Hey! Here's Worf! Y'all remember Worf right?" is that it cheapens both Worf *and* the new characters. Judging by the trailer, I would suggest for example that the inclusion of Annika/Seven is most definitely because they intend to actually do something plot relevant with her. Same with Data. But those things shouldn't be to the expense of new characters. And I've got confidence they won't be.

Right, because as always, the idea is for one show in the franchise to compete with another. Why root for two shows when you can root for one, after all?

Honestly though, I think that if PIcard is a runaway hit, it will hurt the longer-term future for Discovery - even if Season 3 ends up being good (in terms of both reception and ratings). The execs will feel they found their new flagship and start shifting resources around to Discovery's detriment, and CBS will feel if the show is "on the bubble" there is enough other Trek stuff coming out to retire it.

Well the issue is they tried that with Discovery and it didn't go down too well.

Season 1 wasn't the smash hit they wanted so season 2 they bring in pike and Spock, familiar characters, it gets a little better recieved.

Then they announce picard and show Data and Seven to a lot of excitement.

They are going back to what worked before as its a safe bet for them. Personally I'm glad because we might avoid another decade with no trek which I suspected was incoming.

You are on the money. Even the folk on YouTube who DESPISE discovery are saying the picard trailer looks good, it's going to do bigger numbers than Discovery and I can see them canning disc and focusing on spinoffs set in the picard era or maybe even a stargazer show

The last time we seen B4, he wore a yellow collared shirt just like that.
This "Data" is also seemingly wearing the grey part of the uniform. Which B4 did not do. ...not that it proves anything, just pointing it out.

Also, am I the only one who's excited that they aren't actually limiting it to be a TNG nostalgia piece, but throwing in bones for the Voyager fans too? We never really got a lot of great crossover Trek during the Berman era even though they were all supposed to be occuring cocurrently. It's kind of nice that they're now more inclined to treat it all like a single, integrated universe.

To keep subscribers year-round for CBS-AA, it's doubtful they would drop DSC if season 3 goes well all around. These shows can co-exist and compliment one another in wonderful ways. I would expect PIC to do awesome numbers, but that doesn't mean doom for DSC, since they're not in competition with one another.

We've seen a 2-min trailer at this point. I wouldn't place any bets yet if I were you.

Acknowledged. :) :techman: But, one supposes, there's no reason to assume B4 didn't also attempt to follow Data into Starfleet.

As a counterpoint, all the folks I know who have picked up Discovery as their first Trek have pretty much shrugged at this trailer. It may be that each show reaches a different audience, not strictly a greater or lesser one.

Picard has a very limited shelf-life. And even if it didn't, it's banking on currency that doesn't have long-term ROI. Frankly, the probability of Disco season four (or even five) is still much greater than Picard season two.

Yeah, but remember it's not just these two. It's also Lower Decks, eventually the Section 31 show, and maybe a couple of others. If they want to keep premiering new shows, something older is going to be cut (or at least take significant breaks) and that's most likely to be Discovery.
