The plan is not to build up one competitor too strongly, hence splitting Trek up internationally. The big draw when CBS-AA finally goes global will be Trek "coming home" under one roof.

I think "the plan" breaks down to "Netflix don't wanna' pay more"/"Amazon offers much more money".

They could have put both shows on both channels of try wanted to play the long game. Splitting up your own audience between multiple services is the most stupid business plan long term, because it guarantees your fan base splintering.

They wouldn't do that for some weird "competition avoidance plan". That's something only done if either no other options are available, or to much cash being offered to refuse. None of which speaks to a strong negotiation position.

Exactly so. Netflix and Amazon are a means to an end, not the end game.

But why does it seem like nobody wants to be astonished by a show they never even considered? Why prefer more of something named and palatable to new categories of risk? Is it that people no longer believe in these showrunners’ ability to deliver, so they prefer to have them elaborate upon known quantities?

For me the answer is simple: I’ll watch anything Star Trek once (at least) for lore, but I don’t want to ask for a particular kind of show. Surprise me.

People prefer comfort, safe and familiar. In a time of uncertainty (as the world is) safe and familiar is desired.

Discovery has already been uglier than I would prefer, and the Section 31 show only distills uglier aspects I dislike. I hope it will surprise me, but I understand why people are hesitant.

Are any people posting here aware of the online petition to have a Pike-led series? A quick google search of "star trek" with "petition" will bring it right up. I hope it isn't offensive to share this information here.

Not offensive at all. It's been shared and talked about several hundred times on here. Pike is great!

Kurtzman teased hell out of this at SDCC.

Yeah. I suspect there really will be a Pike Enterprise series. I mean they even make two Short Treks with them, too. It would make sense as even without special promotion there is already a hype around it.

It would be wonderful to have both. Maybe there could even be a... crossover *dramatic music plays*

So even 3 Short Treks with the Pike Enterprise characters. :)

They could even go beyond simple guest characters and do interwoven plots like CBS has done before on their crime shows. CSI had a three-parter once centering on Laurence Fishburne's character with each part being in a different CSI series. I'd love to see something like this with Section 31's current plot getting out of control in a way that forces Starfleet to officially get involved, and the Pike series would take up the thread from there.

Pike, Spock and the USS Enterprise were well-received parts of the second season of Discovery, and they even inspired a popular petition. Kurtzman acknowledged this and made it clear the idea of giving the Enterprise crew their own show is on their radar:

"There is speculation about Pike and Spock and Number One getting their own show. So, I guess the question for you guys is do you want them to get their own show? [crowd roars with a positive affirmation] Okay, we will think about it… [with a smile]."

And Picard too, please. That way we got all Pike all the time, since we are wishing for unrealistic things.

Given that they are doing a short Trek (or two) with the crew then they still have the assets to make this show happen. I think they will gauge such a show based upon reception of the Short Trek.

If the Pike petition is based on the safest possible “don’t touch anything, that looks fine right there, give us more of that” approach to “boldly going”, why not add the slightest amount of risk and ask for April in 2245 (or decades earlier if we go by TAS)?
