I was mostly joking about TBBT doing the very same running gag, but then, so did "Married with Children" with Peg's mother. Always joked about being incredibly, inhumanly fat and ugly, and then never seen onscreen.

Maybe use a GIF of one of the times Al talks to his offscreen mom.
