I love the USS Discovery

The Spore drive effect is probably my favourite in all of Trek. I love that they went with something weird and unique instead of the umpteenth coloured tunnel in space.

As for Discovery's design, I would have preferred that they had stuck with the original design from the teaser trailer. It just looked like an old battleaxe/workhorse. I like the current design of the Discovery but it's a bit too shiny and new like Voyager and the Enterprise-D before it. I do love that they kept the general unique design though.

god i forgot about that. that ship had some things i would've loved to see carried over, but on the whole, i'm happy with the ship we got.

I would like to think that the test footage shows us the original fresh-out-of-the-yards configuration of the Crossfield class. The class sister-ships that didn't get tapped for the spore drive project could still look fairly close to this design. I wouldn't object to that.

Generally I like the design but things about it bother me like the entire center section of the saucer being partially detached; why? The other really annoying thing for me is the totally ridiculous flipping around spinning before the spore drive kicks in. It just seems like a pointless gimmick. I really like that it was based on a design from one of the failed reboots in the 70's which is very cool.
First thing that came to mind when I saw it was "spindizzy" from the old Blish series "Cities in Flight" obviously not remotely the same thing, but thats how my brain works. Anyway I liked the idea of it becoming unglued to reality and just looking bizarro for a split second before it jumps. It's the Heart of Gold of Star Trek.

I'm not so sure it actually flips and spins in our space, more that it's coming unstuck from our realm to the spore network where everything is weird and different. Like the weird flippy stuff that happens when you unscrew something in zero-g.

The problem I have with it is that, regardless of intent, the flipping and spinning look extremely literal. Like, I was never under the impression that the stretch-and-snap of the Berman-era warp effect meant that the ship was really stretching out like a rubber band, but I can't seem to read the spore jump effect that way. I think it's the vertical drop at the end of the effect that does it – it just looks like the ship is genuinely zooming vertically at a zillion miles an hour to its destination. The effect is also extremely complex to very little end. There's rotation, multiple images, lightning, and lateral movement. It's too much.

Maybe if it were just rotation followed by a shrinking effect a la the BSG FTL jump effect, it would work. But something about the way it's presented feels very clumsy to me.

I like it, but like many of you, I would prefer the Stubby naccelles of the Pre Production version.. Just wish they'd do more beuty shots, and maybe kind of explain why the shuttle bay doors never seem to work?? ITS ALWAYS OPEN!!
I mean.. has Utopia Planetia issued a recall on the doors yet? :)

As for a "Desk Version" there is a model kit out right now, averaging around $25. Build to about 11 inches long.
You would have to "Build It" but even just snapped together, it looks nice :)

Definitely feels overdone. Though I like simplicity.

Do you have a link for that I'm in the mood for building stuff?

It's one of the things that surprises me most about Discovery, the lack of quality models to buy, you would think CBS would be all over the merchandising possibilities, especially now there are D7's as well.

Theres a shinzou coming out here in a couple of months, and a Disco Enterprise latter this year, all 2500 scale. So slowly but steadily coming out, and I'm gussing next year will be a 1000 scale Discovery, maybe shinzou and Discoprise..

CBS has always botched the merchandising for Star Trek.. Ham fisted at best.

Yeah really slow and half arsed.

The models should have been ready to ship when they were first shown to make the most of the reveals.

you can say that about almost any show/movie.. only one that had model kits ready to go have been the latest star wars movies.. Trek? Good luck on getting it within the first few years.. if at all..

I can see why this time. Were I a store buyer, I wouldn't have bought in on merch from an adults-only series on a startup streaming service. I'd wait and see how it did.

I've grown to like the Discovery design well enough -- it's appealing in a homely sort of way. But the flattened profile makes me think it would be more congruent as a contemporary of the Enterprise E than the original.

Then again now that I think about I cant say I blame them either after what happened to all the toy merchandising for the 7th and especially the 8th Star Wars film.

Lets just say that they didnt exactly fly off the shelves and leave it at that.

With everything being about electronics gaming, apps, etc., there can't be the same fervor for physical models & toys we had in the 70's and 80's.
