Hasbro's Power Rangers era and General Tokusatsu discussion

Honestly. The selection has grown from just the next year season that they can adapt. It used to be a 1:1 ratio.

Sentai airs it's current season. Power Rangers aired last years super sentai.

Now we have a selection of seasons

ToQger- Chances are probably fading away every year for this season

Zyouhger- I don't know if it would be very marketable. The minecraft/ block mecha doesn't leave alot of ideas to implement it into a toyline

Kyuranger- 10 rangers can yield alot of Marvel Legends type of figures thanks to Hasbro.

Lupinranger VS Patranger- Cops vs Magicians due to the hat motif?

 

They'll adapt Ryusoulger next, there's no way they'll pass on dinosaurs.

 

Except it's only been three seasons since Dino Super Charge. That's a bit too soon.

 

It'll be four seasons by the time Beast Morphers is over and it's not too soon, most franchises aimed at kids repeat themselves more often than that. Dinosaurs are obviously the most marketable theme out of the available ones, it's an easy choice.
Sentai also only had a five year dino break between Kyoryuger and Ryusoulger, one additional year doesn't make much kf a difference.

 

I just don't see the rush when there are other series to adapt. I mean, if the dinosaur thing is so important, then turn it around -- what will they do after they use it up? Surely if they jump the gun on adapting Ryusoulger, that just means a longer wait until the next dinosaur-themed season after that. Unless Super Sentai just bows entirely to laziness and does dinosaurs every year.

 

After Ryusoulger I predict an experimental season but something that can be a safe bet to usher in the new Reiwa season.

A Time themed sentai would be too soon after "Zi-O"

Maybe animals? but not retreading Gaoranger

Boat themes/Water are tricky because of the inevitable mecha battles underwater. They're supposedly hard to film.

If they can do a different type of Ninja series that isn't corny or full of ninja puns and game show antics I could get behind it.

Although I guess that's the nature of a Ninja theme. Game show episodes. Puns and absurdity.

If the next super sentai season after Ryusoulger isn't attractive then I could see Kyuranger being adapted

I would be curious to see how they can fit all this into a Power Rangers Hasbro season.

No matter if it's Saban or Hasbro the seasons are shorter and things that took longer to develop in Super Sentai are hurried in Power Rangers nowadays

 

That could've been an advantage to the Neo-Saban approach of splitting things over 2 seasons, if those seasons had been better written. That way, the total number of episodes of a given series is close to the number in the Sentai.

 

There's been another update -- the playlist at the link now includes seven Ryusoulger music cues. (So add 7 to the playlist numbers I cited in my previous quote.)

 

Thanks for the update. 34 and 35 are the most memorable tunes for Ryuusoulger. 35 reminds me of a Zelda game. Just running around the Hyrule fields.

Pulling the past riders out of time, summoning their weapons, that finisher.... it was all just epic. Plus gettng to see the Imagins and Yuuto/Deneb suit up again. Doctor Deneb was a sight to see

The most expensive transformation sequence in Kamen Rider history goes to Grand Zi-O. I can't wait till Grand Zi-O does a slap dash to summon all of the other riders.

Zi-O- Leg's, Knees, Shoulders. Arms, Chest.

The Sougo on Sougo's forehead actually speaks, serving as a sort of "commander" for the summoned Riders. Also the Kamen Rider's summoned seem to be pulled from specific points in time when they were ready to do an attack

Den-O was pulled from an episode where he did a less enthusiastic "Ore, Sanjou"



I realized the Zi-O Op was foreshadowing two things. The Zi-O monument in 2068 was sort of hinting at Grand Zi-O

For 6th ranger debuts this one kind of fell flat. At least we got a proper, longer ground fight in the show.

Canalo is an odd one, though it's not much different from Green and Black having different motives.

Not sure what to make of Creon waxing nostalgia for hanging out with Wiseru and Tankjou Poor Creon.

Not sure I understand the girlfriend cheating on her boyfriend for Canalo.

At least we know that the team can't just pull a random Ryusoul out of thin air that will solve the problem.

 

I loved Momotaros telling Woz's henshin belt "Stop making that noise!" He speaks for all of us...

Big flashy debut and all for Grand Zi-O, but the stakes didn't really seem to justify needing that kind of a power upgrade. Sure, the Mole Imagin duplicated himself (using the same trick the Taros used to duplicate Ryotaro in the first Den-O movie, and that Eobard Thawne used to multiply himself in the season 2 finale of Legends of Tomorrow), but Den-O and Zeronos took on all of the Imagin, so Zi-O was just fighting a single Another Rider, same as always, and thus it didn't seem like a situation that necessitated a new power. It would've made more sense if the majority of the Mole Imagins had been fighting Zi-O.

Interesting that the past Riders were pulled from specific, recognizable moments in the timeline (like OOO's Rider kick finisher with the broken column, which I think was his very first). When Decade's Diend summoned Legend Riders, it was never clear if they were the real Riders (in which case, why were they doing his bidding?) or some sort of simulacra (although the Kamen Rider Black he summoned to team up with Black RX certainly seemed to be the real person). Here, it's pretty unambiguous that Grand Zi-O is pulling them out of the timeline.

Except that's kind of contradictory, because in the first half-season, it was established that the Timejackers erased those Riders from history by taking their powers.


As for Ryuusoulger, it's amusing that the Sixth Ranger is based on the same Japanese legend/fairy tale as Urataros of Den-O (Urashima Tarou or Turtle Boy). But I guess that and the other Taro legends are pretty standard tales in Japan, so they'd crop up in a lot of fiction. I've been watching some older Sentai seasons lately, and I remember seeing a Bioman episode that used the same legend.

It's interesting to see some dissension in the villain ranks, though, and to see Creon cast as a more sympathetic figure. Although it's kind of disgusting to learn how the Minusaurs are created.

Did they really not already have an electric Ryusoul?

Maybe a stage show? Perhaps the son of GoYellow takes his place? Or to give a nod to Power Rangers lightspeed they make yellow his daughter

I wonder how they're going to include GoYellow in this project because Kenji Shibata (GoYellow) retired from showbiz in 2007 due of his ill health.

After filming GoGoV, he was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor

That brings their Sentai collection to an even dozen, with everything from Jetman to Hurricaneger. It also moves them into the equivalent of the Disney Era of Power Rangers, since Hurricaneger was the basis for the first fully Disney-produced season, Ninja Storm.

 

I recently bought Ninja Storm's full season. I've been debating whether I essentially want to repurchase the same thing. Although it would be my first sentai season purchased.

Oma confirmed it himself. Without having the true Drive Watch, Zi-O can't stand against him.

Taking place in an alternate timeline where Hiryu is the Overlord made for an interesting world, and it proved that while Grand may be able to stand against one Another Rider, Another Zi-O (II) is almost too much for it to handle. We finally got to see Gaim fight Another Gaim, at least.

Smart move to turn the Kishiryuoh into a giant magnet that allows five knight combination

There was the moment this week when the Ryusoulger who weren't Canalo and Kou were scattered all across Japan... in what was clearly a series of green screens. The effect was obvious, but it worked well enough. A fun episode, but I'm looking forward to next week even more.

 

I know that some PR seasons were near-exact adaptations of the SS equivalents -- Time Force, Wild Force, Samurai -- but was Ninja Storm that close? I had the impression it was rather different in its characters and tone -- it used mostly original villains, for instance.

Anyway, I'm currently watching Gaoranger, and while I can tell it's very close to Wild Force, I find I'm enjoying it more. I'm not sure why -- maybe I like the actors better, or the humor is more effective. I think I like some of the music better too.


Zi-O: For an aspiring King of Time, Sougo is really bad at catching on to the whole altered-timeline deal. Yet more evidence that the Generations movie isn't being counted, since he dealt with an altered timeline there (which still leaves the mystery of how he got the Kuuga and W watches).

That Woz -- what a sellout, twice over. I forgot that his true loyalty is to the demon king. I thought at least he'd be loyal to the future Sougo version of Oma Zi-O, but it looks like he'll back whoever holds the title. Unless maybe he's a double agent...?

Grand Zi-O didn't use Den-O's sword right -- the blade literally flies off the handle (appropriate for Momotaros's weapon) and is maneuvered through the air by the hilt. But I guess Sougo isn't experienced with its use. I guess this was his hissatsu attack, Part Zero.


Ryu: I know I've seen another monster with this same power to force couples apart magnetically, most likely in one of the Kamen Rider shows. I don't recall what it was, though. Its use here was a bit cursory, but it got the point across that Canalo was starting to bond with Koh. Also, I don't think switching the monster's polarity from S to N would've helped, since it's still like poles repelling.

Once again, it's surprising how much the Kishiryuu are being written as characters with their own drama and conflicts, rather than just vehicles or helper animals. Here, Mosa Rex is the one insisting on maintaining the old hatred for the land Ryusoul Tribe, so he's surely the one who'll have to be convinced to change his mind.

Some cute wordplays here, with Ui's father responding to her saying "Ui" with "Bonjour," and with Canalo's weapon saying "Itadakimosa" (basically "Thanks for the mosasaur"). There seemed to be some wordplays in the bit where the guys ended up in random cities too, but they went by so fast that I had to go through that bit a couple of times and freeze-frame long enough to read the annotations.

Seeing Creon hit on an adolescent girl (even a 123-year-old one) was kinda creepy, though, even granted that he's played as childlike himself. But how did he intend to stab her to death with an obviously blunt giant novelty fork? Anyway, his new boss is quite a tyrant.

 

I don't think I have yet to dislike any of the Super Sentai themes I've listened to.

I've liked everything from 1990 to now.

Noticed Beast Morphers Roxy in the toy aisle at Walmart. This pictures is from ebay but the packaging art still says "Escape" and has the original gold visor of Go-busters Escape

 

Oh, I can't stand the Gaoranger theme song -- very unpleasant vocals. I'm talking about the background music within the episodes, which is by the same composer who did Kamen Rider Decade, W, OOO, and Wizard later on.

There aren't many Sentai or KR theme songs I really like. My favorites are Go-Busters, Lupin v Pat, and Kamen Rider Build, though I find I've been warming to the Zi-O and Ryusoulger theme songs. I like most of the OOO theme song but really dislike the rap portions. But generally the instrumental background music in SS/KR, especially the orchestral parts, is one of my favorite things about the franchise.

 

And if they did adapt it, which team would they place more emphasis on for the series title? They could call it "Power Rangers (insert team name) vs Power Rangers (insert team name)" but that's a lot to cram into the season's logo. They also seem to have an aversion to any sort of long-term conflict between rangers.

 

"They" who, though? Hasbro's making the show now, and there's definitely an improvement in the writing and characterization in Beast Morphers as opposed to the Neo-Saban era shows preceding it. Heck, Saban didn't even want to adapt Go-Busters, but Hasbro went right for it. So we can't assume that the previous policies still hold.

 

I can see two ways so far how to adapt lupin vs patoranger

-Just call it one series specific name.

-Power rangers vector force. Not a good name just something to call the season

-Do two separate seasons. First 10 episodes are patorangers. Second set are the lupirangers half

 

It's been announced that Mill Creek Entertainment has made a deal with Tsuburaya Productions to release every Ultra series on disc and digital in the US. According to Io9 this will be over 1,100 episodes over 30 different series and 20 movies.
