Unpopular Trek opinions game

The sad thing is that, because fans are generally negative on Star Trek V (not me, but certainly in general), the powers that be tend avoid that storyline like the plague. I think it's a completely lost opportunity, as the Sybok character and backstory has a ton of potential.
I agree, if they had avoided some late 80's tropes like bar scene with space rabble it would have been a lot better received, but some of the stuff that did work in that movie really gave depth to some of the characterization. Such as McCoy's father's death scene.

I am an big supporter of the movie, and am absolutely in love with the "In Thy Image" Jack Marshall fancut that turns it into an *amazing* "pilot episode." It was actually the first Trek movie I saw in the theater as a kid. I understand some of the dislike for the movie, but its by far the most TOS-like of the bunch and is a fun adventure.

If I had to change one thing about the movie, it would be a connected issue - starting yet again at Earth, and having the ship malfunctioning as its a new vessel. I would have jumped ahead a bit, and had them well into their post trilogy 5YM, and had the entire camping scene take place on an alien world, and not on Earth in a national park. THAT would be a great reason why the Enterprise is the only ship in range.

Maybe just head canon, but my take is that McCoy didn't kill his father but rather it was a creation of Sybok, a situation that Sybok could then "remove" the pain of. I do think Sybok was a very deceptive character.
Sybok was a child from a previous marriage, a Vulcan princess.
Where are you getting marriage from, I don't remember any such from the movie.

It might be in the novel?

TNG and VOY were more episodic, and therefor easier to casually rewatch. Later seasons of DS9 really have to be watched in a certain order to be fully enjoyed, you can't just randomly watch episodes.

I think Discovery is going to be the same after it's run.

I understand this argument to a certain point, but it still doesn't seem that hard to do when a show catches your interest. I was introduced to a lot of serial shows like Breaking Bad, mid way, an even though I didn't understand the whole setup, the few scenes I saw was what made me want to catch up on the whole show.

Although I will admit some shows are so complex or convoluted that it's hard to make sense of them unless you started from the beginning.

With me, it's the opposite with TNG now. It used to be THE show for me, but now I can hardly re watch it, because it feels so 2 dimensional. The characters, the plots seem so restricted and I think the episodic format had a lot to do with it. The episodes seem to start and end the same way.

It seems to me like the characters and dialog in DS9 were allowed to have a lot more depth than the previous shows.

Voyager is a little better, but continuity, characters, plots, motivations--it was all over the place. It hardly made sense.

"Time and Again" from Voyager is more re-watched than "In a pale Moonlight"? I don't get it.

Ahh, so it didn't happen.

One of the reasons I don't really care for DS9 is with the exception of Jake I wouldn't want to spend time with any of the regulars. Sisko is authoritarian and over the top, Kira is non-stop stressed out, Bashir is creepy around women.

All of the Voyager people (well, except Tom) seem like people I could hang out and get to know and enjoy the process. Janeway is authoritarian, but she knows how to turn it off.

It's funny because I'm the opposite. With the exception of Tom and possibly B'Elanna, I would not want to spend time with the VOY crew.

Same father (Sarek) different mothers, Sybok's mother was a Vulcan Princess. That's what we get from the movie, so what's the alternatives to what I said?
1) Sarek cheated on his wife?

2) Sarek sired Sybok out of wedlock and then married someone else?

What else?

Neither 1) nor 2) make sense within Vulcan culture.

Spock bonks one of his students out of wedlock in the Abrams-verse.

Saavik and her mentor out of wedlock in TSFS.

I figure Sarek and Princess bouncy-time was out of wedlock prior to Sarek marrying Amanda.

He really, really is. Especially the "dating your patient in the middle of a experimental procedure you personally pushed them into undertaking". He did that, what, twice? Gross. Also so unethical it's grounds for yanking his license, especially since it was a pattern of behavior.

After that, even the whole "dating the sorta dead wife of your friend and old fling of yours" seems tame.

I've long maintained that medical ethics centuries from now will be radically different, and humanity will be past our hangups over having a romantic relationship with somebody who you have a professional relationship with.

Bashir is one shifty dude. I liked him when had some standards. I thought he had the best chemistry with Melora.

James Callis, Baltar, was a better Bashir.

Yeah, and then he bragged about it to Amanda? How else do you explain that Sybok and Spock had met before? Did all of Sarek's mistresses visit his house once in a while? How did that work?

Picking up romantic/sexual partners on the job when you're in a position of power likely will never be right.

It won't be a problem, by then most people will have sex with robots or holograms and ectogenesis will be the norm for reproduction.
