Cringe Trek

I saw FC at a matinee on its opening. The theatre was about half full, mostly young men. When the Borg Queen kissed Data, there was a ripple of “ewww” that spread across the room.

I couldn’t tell if it was caused by the Queen being a repellent character, or if it was because Data kissed a girl.

Well she is sexy in a Domanatrix meets Tim Burton kind of way. I also feel the character was also the inspiration for the 7 of 9 character when it comes to personality. They just gave her a catsuit instead of the more spooky look for who knows what reason. Perhaps they felt it played better in terms of family friendly entertainment.

Yeah, I don't think that "family friendly" was exactly what they had in mind when they chose to put Jeri Ryan in that costume.

Family friendly in that it is seen as less kinky. A bunch of teenage boys, yanking it, wasn't exactly seen as an attack on mom, and apple pie values. Sure the Ned Flanders of the world would complain and write letters but they were mostly ignored.

I thought she was sexy. :bolian:
Well, that's just, like, your opinion man ;)

It was still a poor choice, in my opinion, and did not do a service to the character at all. I have slowly warmed to her as a character over the years, and that's largely owing to Jeri Ryan as a person rather than any of the creative choices made on VOY.

Add in the fact that the catsuit monstrosity was designed, in universe, by the Doctor who in turn ends up falling in love with her it turns the cringe and creep factor up to Warp Factor 9.9. We're not infinitely creepy yet, but that's only because I'm sure there is a way to get to Warp 13 here. :sigh:

I agree. I didn't like the catsuit either. I mean she does look sexy in it but it also takes you out of the scene a little because it's so clearly their to appeal on a sexual level. The high heels are worst and this is something you see given to all the female characters on Trek. It's kind of a disgrace. I wasn't even fond of them altering Kira's outfit on "DS9" in season 4 but at least it sort of still looks like the traditional Bajoran outfit. Seven's outfit especially that first silver one was absurd.

I completely agree and T'Pol kind of put the nail in the coffin on that one. But, it just stands out as such blatant sex appeal that even Ryan and Mulgrew knew it. Just, ugh.

Well, when they did that they looked like reptiles though. Reptiles don't chew they swallow things whole and then it takes them weeks to digest. Seeing someone chewing with his mouth open on something that really looks like worms is another kettle of fish.

Not really. Not if you realize it's fiction and a TV or movie set with props.

While worms can be kind of icky they have never bothered me to much. Though people should see that scene from "911" this year that had a worm come out of a girls face. That was pretty gross.

I somehow have the feeling that Klingon cuisine has nothing on the Surströmming.

But seriously, all this discussion of gross food starts to remind me of the feast scene from The Temple of Doom. Chilled Monkey Brains, anyone?

Troi floating in her dream in the episode "Night Terrors"
The scene is pretty cringe worthy in the original..and one of the rare instances where the german dub actually manages to make a scene BETTER...I don´t know why...but the german voice actress actually SELLS this scene.

I don´t get this complaint about Burnam at all. Ohhh...someone on Star Trek is actually finally showing effing real natural human emotion! How terrible!
This. SMG's portrayal of Burnham is actually spot-on for someone who was raised for her whole life being told that emotions are bad and they should be suppressed. Vulcans can learn it without ill effects, Humans can't. She's always been very believable for me as someone who never learned how to deal with her feelings in a healthy way so she just bottles them all up until something causes her to break down.

Faces of Death, the two couples eat the brains of a live monkey. Not a video/ movie fake I don't believe. It looked like real footage, nice restaurant, two couple dressed up nicely for dinner, there is a monkey strapped into a cage under the table, still alive, the waiter cuts away the top of the exposed monkey's head through the table and the patrons eat it.

Thanks for that image, I've just had lunch :guffaw:Another film to put on my never watch list.

When I was 13, i went to a friends house. He had an old vhs. He put it in, and I saw this. There was another scene about a guy changing his tire which I think has traumatized me, because even though I had completely forgotten about this movie(until now... thanks...)I still have a terrible fear whenever I'm rotating my tires, or replacing my brakes.

uhhggggjhggh:censored: I regret opening this thread.
