Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel - First Time Viewer

The Cordelia action figure had a flip phone. It was supposed top represent how self-obsessed she was.

I hear it’s just supposed to be Buffy but set in modern times. That just means they all have phones now. :)

They're doing that in the regular comics now too.

Season two, early days with Spike and Drusilla, but set now, and Buffy is on a blind Date with young Robin Wood.

Cell phones didn't really go clamshell until 2003 with the popular Motorola ones being 2004. Buffy was right on the cusp of it all I think but they do make an appearance at some point.

Dawn got one as a present...
First day of High School, season seven. There was a misdirect. Buffy called it a weapon.

Darn, I was hoping to maybe relive the birth of the flip phone through this show. Oh well.

Flip phones are still the coolest of all the mobile devices. If smart phones were also like that, I would buy one.

Well, to be fair we are on a Trek message board and the first flip phone we ever saw happened in 1966. It was a sci fi thing at the time, but close enough. ;)

If that is in response to me, that's the Boom! Studios reboot, which is a different series. That one is a more direct reboot, with all of the original characters, and even with the original actors' likenesses, in high school in Sunnydale. That ones has even brought in a some characters who came in later, like Spike and Drusilla, who is the big bad, Anya, and even a teenage version of a character who was introduced as an adult in either Season 6 or 7.

Why are people talking about flip phones like they are ancient? My current phone is a flip phone. It's also what all future phones will look like once this current fad or mobile devices or whatever we call them goes away.

A Fad that's lasted at least 12 years with 5G on the way?

Glad to know I'm not the only one who doesn't have a smart phone.
I really can't see them going away, they will probably look very different in a few years as new capabilities continue to be added, but they'll still be a lot more advanced than flip phones.

I don’t see the touch screen format going away. Nor the expectation that the full internet is available.

I don’t see the point of rebooting Buffy. The performances are so particular to the actors and Wheadon’s writing is very particular.

The modern phones will go away when the internet and Wi Fi is someday overhauled. It might even be to expensive for most people in the future to have the kinds of phones they might have today. People should stock up on physical media while they are at it.

I also don't see much rebooting Buffy unless Whedon is going to have control over it and oversea it. Now a new show within the continuity would be interesting. That Fray show or Ripper show or something else. Maybe a show about a werewolf.

There was something about rebooting the series with a black lead. I don’t get why that should be important but I would give it a go.
A follow up show would be more interesting

Holographic interface beamed from a belt buckle or a virtual interface after eye surgery or on a contact lens.

The whole thing going verbal is a complete possibility.

So I understand your argument, are you saying that corporations will control the internet to such an extent it will become prohibitively expensive?

I’m not sure what you mean by overhauled. The only way offering current services will ever be expensive is if one group attains a monopoly.

You know I was thinking about this today and thank you for reminding me. When did Cell Phones become a thing. Am I too early or shouldn’t they have at least the flip phone by now (2000, 2001). I was a late adopter to the whole cell phone thing but I have to think they are close to when Flip Phones were common place.
I'm a year older than the characters in Buffy. When I went to college in 1998, I didn't have a cell phone and none of my friends did either. In my senior year (2001-02), I got a Nokia brick phone but rarely used it ... at that point, seeing cell phones around campus wasn't uncommon, but there were also still plenty of people who didn't use one. At some point between 2002 and 2005 I may have let my contract lapse; I definitely still used a landline right up until 2005. I'm pretty sure 2005 or 2006 was when I first got a flip phone instead of the old brick models.

It looks like 2003 was the first year that a majority of the U.S. population used a cell phone.

Unless you're being incredibly strict about spoilers, you can go ahead and open this one, because it's completely unimportant:

Buffy finally concedes to the existence of cell phones at the beginning of Season 7, in fall 2002. I think they had held off until then because cell phones would have made some of the storylines much easier to resolve, and writers hadn't gotten used to introducing cell-proof plot complications yet.

Angel did have a cell phone in Season 1, I think, but since the show was set in the whole of Los Angeles, they needed an easier way to communicate. Plus it was one of those "Angel is an old man" jokes because he couldn't figure out how to use it. :)

Family

This episode was beautiful, except for one thing. I didn't really like how one dimensional Tara's family was. They were so dead set on her coming back, but there was never any motivation as to why. I get the episode was about family doesn't have to be blood kin, but I really wish there was more meat around the bones of the "evil" family. Close families aren't all evil.

Other than that, there was plenty to like about this episode. For one, I was shocked Amy Adams was in it. I did not expect that. I also liked Spike actually jumping in to help Buffy, another sign that maybe the chip wasn't removed, but maybe it was altered some how. That's the only explaination I have for the dreams of him and Buffy "doing it" together. I also, of course loved the sentiment, that at the beginning of the episode Tara felt distanced from the Scooby Gang, but now she's 100% involved. Her and Willow's scene at the end was pretty emotional.
