Unpopular Trek opinions game

Unpopular opinion: DSC is, so far, better than DS9.

Well, now we know who is serving as a vessel for the Pah-Wraiths. Can I hear an Amojan?

Strongly disagree.

Tit for tat unpopular opinion: Forget ensembles vs. one or a few protagonists; anything good about DSC's characters is overshadowed by the terrible writing on the series. Characterization seems destined to not even be in the same car as the ever-careening plot, let alone taking a backseat.

Jumping in to keep this thread from turning into yet another referendum on DISCO.

Voyager had arguably the best pilot of all the latter-day Trek shows. It briskly and efficiently introduced the characters and set-up, without some of the clunkiness that afflicted "Encounter at Farpoint" or (to a much lesser degree) "Emissary."

(Don't really remember "Broken Bow" all that well.)

The thread is about unpopular opinions in Star Trek, which includes Discovery. I would hope we're mature enough to not let a GTD thread turn into a all-DSC discussion.

Here's a possibly unpopular opinion: Having Riker and Troi cameo at the end of TATV was a clever nod to the meta-ness that pervaded the fourth season of ENT.

Unpopular opinion- in this age of globalisation/migration where actors come from diverse backgrounds, the next reboot of TNG and Jean Luc Picard should at least have a French speaking actor in the role with a real French accent. La Forge is meant to be Somalian, there are East AFricans actors out there, it won't kill a casting director to find one. Ideally I prefer a reboot TOS to have actors that reflect the nationality of the characters as well. Its not impossible to do, there was no non Irish actor playing Irish, Miles Edward O'Brian.
New Star Trek actors do not need to be A list famous, none of their predecessors were.
Agreed. In fact, my go-to reboot for Picard has always been Vincent Cassel. He's perfect for it

Unpopular opinion: Data's idiosyncrasies (can't do contractions, can't quote a proverb or an expression without changing the words which is stupid for someone with a perfect memory, can't whistle!!) and his weird skin color make him an involuntary parodic imitation of Asimov's robots.

/\Also,an android who could jack into any Federation database yet still not recognize simple figures of speech seems stupid.
This is why in my head canon, I sort of retcon all those attributes to being a result of designer choice. Clearly there's other models made by the same designer, even previous models, that didn't suffer from those limitations. He did it to Data deliberately, perhaps as a method of humility, a trait which we know was tragically lacking in the previous model

Agree...I always looked at it as a programming choice, to differentiate him from humans purposefully.

Controversial: I liked the Into Darkness role-reversal from TWOK for Kirk's death scene.

I liked it very briefly, liked the symmetry. For just long enough for the rest of my brain to catch up and begin seeing all of the reasons it shouldn't have been done. Which happened in about 0.68 seconds.

Controversial: I want to see Love Instructors actually incorporated into canon somehow. Not because I'm trying to turn Trek into porn or anything - got actual porn for that. And not necessarily as a major plot point (unless there's a really compelling one they can tell with it). But just because Roddenberry wanted it included, and there's a lot of fans whose heads would explode. :D

Unpopular opinion: Back when she said stuff like "Pain, terrible pain... Loneliness, atrocious loneliness..." Deanna was kinda sexy..., especially in her spandex outfit.

This must be done! The comedy would be out of this world!

Neelix was actually a helpful member of the crew and carried his weight. ………..he wasn't THAT awful.

Neelix helped guide Voyager in the earlier part of their journey being a native to the Quadrant and just being a scavenger. He really did make a difference to morale and of course they would not have made it without his skills with Leola root recipes.

Popular Opinion - Gene Roddenberry's personal life has tainted his unique contribution to being the creator of Star Trek but mostly only by hardcore fans. Regular fans don't give a toss.

Agreed. Like Refuge said, he was a guide. I think maybe the biggest problem that made him seem goofy and useless was that we rarely *saw* him guiding. A few more scenes of Janeway having one on ones with him, or of him providing useful information in the conference room, could have made a lot of difference in how he's perceived. (But also, not writing a relationship for the character with a girl that was only ever going to reach 9 years old - whatever her physical appearance - might have helped, too.)

Controversial opinion: The Enterprise-D was better, visually, than the Enterprise-E - *because* the -D was interestingly ugly, whereas the -E was a boring bland design.

Unpopular opinion: I like holodeck episodes. It beat the hell out of TOS doing essentially the same thing by pretending a whole planet is like 20s gangsters
Actually, I liked the whole Hodgkin's Theory of Parallel Planetary Development thing. And what's really screwed up is that something very similar exists in some of the real scientific theories, now. So definitely less BS than the reason no one could just unplug the freaking holodeck. ;)
