Based on what is known about it, do you guys think a "newbie" could watch the movie and then work backwards through the series itself without being confused?
Probably could, but we have no idea until we actually see it. That said, I don't know why you would do that. I imagine a big part of the movie will be the emotional closure of knowing all of these characters for so long and you would be robbing yourself of that by watching it first.
From what we know, the new movie will bring closure to previous storylines so I'd recommend against the backwards method. There is a good chance you'd lose the emotional and mental impact of the story.
The reason I'd watch the movie first is so that I didn't have to wait months to see it since I'd be treating the series and my viewing of it as if it were currently on-the-air and watching one episode a week.
I'd highly recommend watching the series first. I recently watched it and there are many subtleties in the series that would simply be lost to watching the movie first. Being that the series is also very character driven rather than plot driven, those subtleties do make a difference to understanding what's going on.
If I were going to try and binge the series, waiting to watch the movie until after I'd seen all 3 seasons would be the "default" option, but because I want to make the series weekly "appointment TV" as if it were actually still on-the-air, there are other things to consider.
^ To consider? Like who is in ear shot of the TV and at what volume at which you view it .... The sheer amount of profanity is off the charts...

I'm rewatching it all now too, closing in on the end of season 1. This is actually the 3rd time I've watched it. Still convinced it's one of the best 1st seasons of any show ever, & yes, it's a show that almost requires multiple viewings, because there are deeper layers to everything said, and even every silent reaction The 2nd viewing has you focus in on the layers of what they say, the lies & misdirection, but the 3rd, I'm noticing all the reaction shots, that pass by without dialogue, & realizing how they play into what is happening or is to come. For example, I use to think Bullock was just an asshole who didn't like the preacher, because he was... preachy, but this time? after having digested a lot of what the preacher is actually saying? He's not just passively preachy, in general. He's preaching almost exclusively at Bullock. The things he's saying are definitely about Bullock, his manner, his way, his attitudes etc...He's trying to "save" him, to some degree, & the looks Bullock is gritting his teeth through are because he knows it, & in essence it's an untouchable way of passing judgement, & Bullock sure don't like anybody passing judgement on him, but it's not like it would be socially acceptable to run the preacher down for it, or buck back at him It kind of makes me think now of Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood, when the preacher kid calls him out in front of the congregation, & he just has to lay back & take it. There's a really subversive power in piety.
I think I'm going to not only watch the series, but go ahead and tune in for the movie despite the risk of being 'lost'.
It's not about being "lost." It's about missing out on the emotional impacts and closures that the film will provide. The show has always been about the characters first, story second.
I wasn't just referring to narrative when I commented on the possibility of being 'lost' by watching the movie before I watch the series, but I've decided that not having a full appreciation of who the characters are and what their motivations are is a risk I'm willing to take.
Just finished my rewatch of the entire series and, boy, I'm so glad I did it. There were so many character intricacies that I had completely forgotten about, many of which I'm certain will come to play in the movie. The story may have largely concluded after the third season, but the character arcs remained deeply intertwined with each other in such a manner that I can't imagine trying to understand those nuances in the film alone without the show's context. I also had forgotten about the beautiful flourishes of dialogue. It's practically Shakespearean without the pretension. I sure hope that remains true for the film. Bring on May 31! I cannot wait.
One week from today! Finished my rewatch on Wednesday. Very happy I did that because I had completely forgotten the story from the last two episodes and, from the trailer, it seems to play a role in the movie. I felt so fucking bad for Johnny in the last ep.
Next Friday is going to be all around awesome. This film AND Good Omens! Godzilla: King of Monsters also comes out next Friday but I'm going to wait a day or two because of this film and Good Omens.
I don't see how it could be otherwise What's weird is that I see Keith Carradine is credited as Wild Bill in it. I wonder what that's about. I'm honestly so glad Brad Douriff is back for Doc Cochrane, but man it's pretty amazing he came out of that tuberculosis to still be kicking what looks to be a decade later The actress who played the murdered girl is credited as well. So that aspect of ugliness is fully in play, just as much as Trixie's attempt on Hearst's life. What's weird, is I don't expect they'd have done much with it had the show come back for a 4th season, but to leave it lie where they did, makes it seem darker, like a real stain on everybody I'm glad I made it through a rewatch too. This here looks almost like its entire intent is to be a much belated finale of sorts. How it will play, I can't be sure, but I'll be pleased as punch to sit down for it
The only place I've seen Keith Carradine and Jennifer Lutheran credited for Deadwood: The Movie is on the IMDb, where pre-release credits are sometimes wrong. It'll probably be corrected after the movie debuts on Friday and official credits can be viewed.
That could be, but I did see an interview with McShane & he kind of hinted at there being some unresolved issues over what they had to do to her character. So who knows what we're in store for
