It's the end of a trilogy, it's star wars, it'll have 100 million of marketing, it'll be opening with zero opposition, of course it will do pretty well

But it won't break no records, Mark my words, that went out the window with TLJ

Yeah, both movies are poised to improve on their previous entries. Of course even when Endgame was only projected to take in $800m in the opening weekend it was going to be an uphill battle for RotS. Now it's all but over. Even if Endgame doesn't quiet get to Avatar level, it's still going to be closer to $2.5B than to to $2.0B
I just don't see Star Wars getting anywhere close to that.

I hope it beats avatar, I enjoyed it as a spectacle but really it was a bang average sci-fi with a cool gimmick. Time to knock it off its perch

Endgame was an amazing finale to a decade long, 22 movie series that has almost never failed to deliver

Rise of Skywalker Is the finale of a middling, lazy cash-in trilogy living of past glories from 40 years ago

I know which one I'm rooting for

I'm a much bigger SW fan than I'll ever be of Marvel and I agree with this.

In keeping with Marvel vs Star Wars theme:

If fans loved TLJ then wtf happened with the boxoffice? I didn't follow the TLJ fans reaction too much. I actually liked it. The middle part where they went to that planet to get The Collector was pretty boring, but the rest of it was pretty cool. Why did it do so poorly compared to TFA?

Because TFA was the highest domestic grossing movie of all time? It was NEVER going to match TFA. But on its own it is still in the top 10 highest grossing movies of all time. Surpassed only in the Marvel universe by Avengers, Black Panther and Infinity War (and soon enough Endgame). I really don't think it is fair in ANY universe to say it did "poorly."

Pretty sure I said "compared to TFA". Making $700m less than previous movie is kinda "bad"

It made over a billion dollars, how is that bad?
Wow, straw man's argument. Finally see one in action!
Well, no.. A billion dollars is not "bad". But that's not what I was asking, now was it? Why did it do so bad compared to previous entry? Especially since as we can see with Endgame, having previous entry doing "great" doesn't mean the new entry "has" to do worse.

And why is everyone so sensitive about TLJ?

I know what a straw man argument is, I don’t think you do though. TFA was a larger cultural event, the return of the original Star Wars cast. TLJ was a sequel and the third Star Wars film in three years. It isn’t going to have the same impact. I’m pretty sure the people constantly complaining about how TLJ ruined Star Wars are a bit more sensitive about that anyone else. They’re still making the same complaints two years later. Get over it. It happened and if you think JJ is going to undo all of it, you’re sorely mistaken. TROS will continue that story and be a conclusion to the trilogy.

And, as I said, TFA was a one-time special thing. TLJ was NEVER going to make that much money. For that matter, the Avatar sequels will not make as much money as Avatar, and the next MCU team-up movie (whether it is Avengers or whatever) will most likely not make as much money as Endgame. That won't mean they aren't successful/loved/whatever metric you want to put on it, it means the previous movies were one-time movies that captured a specific moment in the zeitgeist.

Can Endgame beat Avatar?

To match or best Avatar, Endgame would need to do more than 2.3 times its opening, a reasonable expectation for many successful tentpoles. However, no film has ever opened to this level.

No one, including Disney executives, will have a sense of how front-loaded Endgame is until its second weekend, but note the film's stellar word-of-mouth.

"It's a can't-miss movie," says Disney distribution chief Cathleen Taff.

The tentpole, a direct sequel to Infinity War and a culmination of the previous 21 titles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is benefiting from a coveted A+ CinemaScore from audiences, glowing reviews and a staggering 82 percent recommend on PostTrak. It doesn't face any real competition for two more weeks until Detective Pikachu opens May 10.

2.3x multiplier is definitely doable. Definitely. Second weekend will tell a lot about it's chances. The biggest enemy seems to be... Pikachu... :D

OK, so we all agree Rise of Skywalker won't be much competition for Endgame, but I thought of two other competitors, Frozen 2 and The Lion King. I don't know if they'll be able to do Endgame numbers, but what about RoS? I'm not sure about TLK, but I could see Frozen 2 beating it.

It actually isn't bad. Largely because sequels rarely do as much money as their predecessors, though Marvel films are working hard on making that conventional wisdom obsolete. But, by Hollywood accounting it is not "bad."
It's like when you start challenging people's religious beliefs. They don't like it and take criticism as a direct attack on them.
Or just fatigued at the misinformation that runs around about it. Possibly both :D

I was certainly hoping that JJ would not undo TLJ, but judging from that first trailer... damn. The trolls might have won this time.
