I've played it multiple times. It plays nothing like a newer game.

the ship combat in sto just did not interest me at all. i tried it on pc and console and its just kind of boring to me. but i can see the appeal. ive played better space combat games that were far more involving and complicated.

It's an MMORPG. Most of games in that genre play like that, click on enemy and press button.

There are games newer than STO that still play like that.

I've finished S2 of SDT and I'll just say I agree with the series' harshest critics. I don't consider this series to be ST.

My frustration with the series is that there wasn't anything wrong with S1 that couldn't be easily fixed. I don't mind the redesigns although some info has emerged that these were due to licencing issues, which is unfortunate. But these are the things that bothered me:

    1) Technology: S1 introduced a lot of fantastical and whimsical technology. The series wisely couched these elements in as many caveats and problems as possible. It would have been very easy to drop this element, which did not go over big with fans, by simply appealing to the built-in problems and drop them as being (a) experimental (b) too dangerous (c) too dangerous if they fell into the wrong hands. I was very disappointed that they doubled down on that aspect.

    2) Characters: S1 managed to end in a great place. Burnham was crestfallen and determined to earn her way forward. Stamets was established as brilliant, difficult but complex and ultimately a very human and sympathetic character. Saru had overcome his nerves and landed in the captain's chair with grace. Tilly had survived a trial by fire and was poised to continue her apprenticeship and journey. For everything I did not like in S1, I felt they had successfully set up some potentially strong characters. Within the show, only minutes have passed and all of that was gone. Burnham became an insufferable "Mary Sue". Tilly is suddenly on par with Stamets. Stamets seems like he's at a sleepover party. Saru is reset to the pilot episode. The rest of the season kept them locked into that mode.

    3) Writing: The biggest disappointment. If they had simply gone to an episodic format, giving the characters episodes to grow them they could have had a hit on their hands. Instead they went for another "epic" arc, a truly nonsensical story that was about nothing.

    4) Continuity: Almost all the Trek series had elements in the first seasons that were dropped later. It's okay, it's only a TV series. The many points that push STD out of established continuity could easily have been avoided and over time they would have been forgotten. As in other Trek series, some of those issues were retconned later. They just tripled down.

Those are the reasons I'm dumping this show. It had great promise: my favorite Federation starship design by Ralph McQuarrie, a huge budget, a strong cast. They could have made a brilliant Trek series, they chose not to.

I highly doubt anyone said, "You know...we have all the makings of a brilliant Trek series...let's just choose not to. Yeah, that's it, we'll just choose not to."

DSC is pretty brilliant too a good many people, including fans such as myself, who've been watching since the TOS-only days. To me it's like reading a good, long novel—and when it takes unexpected or seemingly incongruent turns, it's fun to see how it gets worked out. You have to see where it goes. It ain't over till it's over.

My ire back in the ENT days is that fans whined and moaned and the series was cancelled before the entire story was told. Plenty of loose ends remained loose because of this.

I'd hate that to happen to DSC. The only complaint I have about DSC is a provisional one: if the shift to 950 future is indeed a response to the outcry of some voices on the internet (who I believe seem more numerous than they really are), then I wish the producers had stuck to their original vision rather than cave.

It does sound like there is a plan for S3 in place, so I do think it might have been in the original vision and didn't cave as some are claiming. But we'll see.

ALL CAPS is only cool if you're David Draiman.
Wait, what? I've heard nothing about any upcoming Short Treks.

If you don't consider it Star Trek, then you shouldn't call it "STD" because that stands for Star Trek Discovery. "STD isn't Star Trek!" never works as a sentence. The bashers, by calling it that, are undercutting their own argument.

I thought that is exactly what they did, right before setting fire to a pile of money.

Generations did both the space and ground combat better 22 years ago (not to mention the likes of Starfleet Command, Klingon Academy and co).

I could maybe tolerate it if the writing was particularly good, but it's low-grade fanwank.

Yes your not the only one who feels that way. However there are also many others who love it. I'm hoping that with the creation of other Star Trek series in the works that we will all have our favorites and focus on them. Right now its tough for some of us since Discovery is the only new Star Trek show available for now. We will just have to wait and see what the Picard series is all about.

There are meant to be two animated ones, and another two Discovery ones.

Nobody really knows about the former - Memory Alpha had them listed for the next two weeks as a placeholder, but there's been no announcement as to when they'll be available. The latter are to be filmed in May.

Discovery is getting better but the problem for me now is these scenes we see where we get big speeches about what they all mean to each other. They don't make any sense as we have few everyday moments of bonding before hand, and these are vital if those attempts at the deep touchy feely stuff are going to stack up for the audience and seem plausible.

While we're sort of on the topic of Trek games, it really shouldn't be that hard to make a great one. All they'd have to do is rip off Mass Effect as shamelessly as possible and place greater emphasis on diplomacy and dialog.
