just finished the series.and enjoyed it a lot, not keen on the 950 years in the future part for the next season

I see that season 3 will have Burnham, Tilly, Owosekun, Bryce, Jett Reno , Keyla Detman, Stamets, and Culber.
    Possibly Nhan also.

I get you must have the different races on Earth represented, the different sexual orientations, and obviously genders and the token aliens for the show, and that is a great thing and symbolizes what trek should always be.
But if this show is to be seen as something that represents all colors, creeds, genders, sexual orientations, where in the fuck is the straight while male ?

Last time I checked they made up a sizeable proportion of people on Earth , you would think they would have at least one in the main cast, even in this political correct world gone mad.

Brave post. Get ready to be ridiculed about being a 'man-baby' or some such thing. The straight white male has been castrated.

    Thanks Refuge
Way I see it, were there no gay character there would be calls for a gay character and totally understandable.
Is a straight white male entitled to less respect or representation. ?

I have no doubt some will fail to see the actual point of my post and wish to bandy labels about, but it is a valid question

I think in some respects you are calling out a massive flaw in the diversity of the climate we live in.

As a straight white male I don’t give a rats ass if I’m represented or not.

Also now you know how minorities feel when they’re not represented.

There was enough straight white male privilege in all the previous versions of Trek. I’m sure there will be others who show up in S3.

There’s also Lieutenant Rhys as part of the bridge cruise. He’s the Tactical Officer. He’s Asian, but for all intents and purposes, he is straight and white

I wouldn't mind a show without the 'straight white male', they have been over-represented in Star Trek since the 1960's.

I’d be fine if there wasn’t a white cisgender male in the main cast (and I am a white cisgender male) but $5 says the coveted “and” credit previously held by Isaacs and Mount will be one.

Roughly 6.5%, going on some necessarily vague figures (how do you define 'white'?) and some assumptions (proportion of self defined gay/bi individuals worldwide being roughly equal to the UK). In a cast of 8, that's 0.48 people should be straight, male and white to represent the world population as is. If we include Doug Jones as straight and white (the actor is white and the character is, as far as we know, straight), they are over-represented. If we exclude alien characters from the mix (which also deletes Worf, B'Elanna, Guinan and Tuvok from Trek's already spotty history of diversity) , it is only 0.42 people needed, and so having zero is not far off representative.

I'm going to address your question assuming you are being, if you'll pardon the expression, straight, and not trolling for a reaction. Star Trek has had a huge number of straight male characters, and exists in a TV environment where the default character is straight, white and male. There has to be a reason to have a woman, or a black guy. You never have a reason to cast a white dude. We are represented everywhere. To a degree that we never even have to think about it, because it's unavoidable. We are the hero, the romantic lead, the action man, the nerd, the villain, even half the time we are the gay or disabled character too. There's not one role out there I can't think of someone who looks like me fulfilling. Western culture is soaked in representation of straight white maleness, and a particular form of it at that. That it is so strange when it is absent is really indicative of how pervasive it really is.
So on the rare occasions you get a show without straight white male leads, like Discovery s3, or The Good Fight, it really isn't a problem that needs fixing. We've been playing since the match began and it is very much our turn to be benched.

Yikes when someone brings up the Good Fight as a good show, I just want to spew :barf: Their whole argument becomes crap.

Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Chekov, Picard, Riker, Wesley, O’Brien, Quark, Odo, Paris, the Doctor, Neelix, Archer, Trip, Phlox, Reed, Lorca, Pike. That‘s 20 white straight males!
I would include Saru, but to be honest, we have no idea if he is straight or not, so...

    Now how about other demographics?

Uhura, Rand, Crusher, Troi, Tasha, Kira, Dax, Dax 2, Janeway, Torres, Kes, 7, T‘Pol, Hoshi, Burnham, Georgiou, Tilly. That‘s 17 all women.
Almost as many as straight white men. But wait, let‘s apply the same standard and just count straight white women, shall we?

Rand, Crusher, Troi, Tasha, Kira, Dax 2 (Dax 1 was at least bi), Janewax, Kes, 7, T‘Pol, Tilly. Look at that. Just 11 left, about half as many as SWM!

Now let‘s look at colored people.
Uhura, Sulu, Worf, LaForge, Sisko, Jake, Bashir, Tuvok, Kim, Chakotay, Sato, Mayweather, Burnham, Georgiou, Tyler (went by the actor‘s ethnicity, not by the character‘s, just to be gracious here), Culber. 16. all lumped together. Not even gender separated or into black, Asian, Hispanic, whatever... 16 total!

    Lastly, non straight:
Dax, (alternate Sulu), Culber and Stamets. And those last two come as a package deal...
So just 4 out of which only Stamets is not having to do double duty in another minority group!

White straight male „wins“ in every category.

    Where are your facts?

@Refuge do stop trying to stir in this thread. We all see it. Either engage properly with an argument, or leave the thread alone.

    Dear gazomg

As a straight, dark brown female where over representation has NEVER been an issue for me, I feel your pain.

'Political correct world gone mad' - btw do you miss the days when you (generic) can treat humans who do not look like you like shit or other disrespectful ways?

I'm half Middle-Eastern. Other than Bashir on DS9, I'm still not represented on that front. Not in this series. I'm bi. My only representation on that other front is arguably Emperor Georgiou, who really identifies as pan. "Evil!" Still don't care.

    So there you have it.

Besides being the captain for the first season and the second season? And Spock? And several background characters? And numerous prominent and secondary characters for every other Trek TV show? And being wildly over-represented on most other TV shows and movies produced in the Western world?

There are numerous white heterosexual women or white male gay characters on the show. Given that there is no shortage of straight white males to identify with on TV and film (disproportionately so), where is the pressing need for more when you have other characters who share two out of three of those qualities? The other groups are traditionally underrepresented, so they need more examples of people like them. You can find straight white males everywhere.

I don't believe they've finished casting for season three so there are likely to be more characters joining anyway, and I bet some of them will be straight white males.

How is it not political correctness to demand greater straight white male representation when you are not underrepresented and have been featured on the show as recently as three days ago and will most likely be featured in the next season as well? Who made your feelings the default setting on what determines political correctness?
