It was thirty ships (that couldn't deal with two other ships) against hundreds (or seven thousand, if we really believe that line.) Doesn't sound like an insurmountable problem to me.

At this point in the timeline, Control is a threat RIGHT NOW. If you don't act to eliminate the threat RIGHT NOW, it doesn't matter what may or may not happen in the future, IMHO.

All the ships together could barely take on a single heavy cruiser.

Starfleet would have hunted them down in a couple weeks once they had actually been informed of the problem.

True, but the Guardian of Forever's planet appears to have some shielding against timeline alterations, so the landing party continue to exist even after the Enterprise vanishes. Same thing with Spock continuing to exist and Kirk's mind remaining unaffected in Yesteryear.

Burnham's timesuit having similar shielding might work as an explanation, which could expand to the Discovery since it follows right after her, but then the Enterprise, along with L'Rell and pals, should have all found themselves in a new timeline right after Discovery left where the battle they just won never took place.

I should probably mention I don't mean this as a criticism of the show, getting mired down in this stuff is pretty much my favourite part of time travel stories.

Because continuity is easier in the future.

They showed the ability to track the vessels in real time...

    So no, it's not.

I think its fair to speculate that the Guardian of Forever is probably constructed of the same stuff Time Crystals are.

When they are more than 5-10 minutes away? And when they are disguised as asteroids too?

How did control get so powerful in the first place that it wiped out all life forms in the future

I never understood why they didn't just use the spore drive, jump straight into Earth Orbit, have the entire Starfleet build a defense ring around the Discovery, and let the best engineers of the Federation handle the sphere data problem.

On the plotting side, this whole arc had some serous issues. It's really more about following the ride, not thinking about it. Otherwise most of it woldn't work. But it wasn't as straight up stupid as the hand-bomb that could destroy Kronos, or Empress Georgious' ship that was threatening to destroy the entire multiverse. So that's a plus, I guess.

The easiest way would have been for Discovery to allow Leland to beam aboard (like what actually happened), pretend like they were going to try to fight their way out of it, then drop all shields and expose the warp core section to direct fire as soon as the Control armada opened fire.

BOOM, ship destroyed, data destroyed, Leland destroyed.

I think there's duplicity about the supposed defeat of Control.
The nanobots from within Leland's carcass are still in situation in the Spore Chamber, on Discovery
After spending several episodes trying to keep the Sphere Data from Control, and coming to the conclusion that they had to go to the future, they now are in the situation where they have travelled forward in time with the remnants of Control on the ship, nearer the Data than ever.
    Control will still be lurking.
