No it's not. Some episodes are as good as Voyager's mediocre episodes. But all in all, it sits way below other shows, on the very bottom of Mariana trench.

It had my favourite first season of Trek, and so far it's had my favourite second season.

Better yet, my partner enjoys it a lot more than any of the other Trek series which I compelled her to watch.

Absolutely. I get, support, and experience all of that.

I think it rocks... and I experience periodic issues with with the writing for various characters.

Adore two characters, luv luv luv a half dozen more. Gripe at the TV screen about another.

I would be content if two characters were reworked or got assignments elsewhere (off the series so to speak  ), and disapprove of sec31 as it's being presented (posted elsewhere in TBBS) so want to never see episodes with it again.

Luved the spore drive, then got bothered with it. REALLY WANT RENO to be the Discovery's doctor.

I didn't warm to one character in s1, then did warm to the character In s2. Warmed to two characters in s1 that I have issues with in s2.

    And.... I luv the series.

You know... a typical ST fan of a typical ST series. :)

Rick Berman's catch phrase used to be "We are very pleased." It became a bit of a joke after a while. If Alex Kurtzman ever starts saying that, we're screwed.

I'll reiterate what I've said before: for all the gripes that we might have as obsessive Trek fans, my fact that my mom, my best friend, her husband, my boyfriend, my ex-boyfriend, my other best friend, and several co-workers who have never and would never watch Trek are watching Discovery, nay, binge-watching and re-watching Discovery...tells me they've tapped into some kind of magic (my dad and I have always watched Star Trek, and he's watching too).

[Tilly]Something here is the right formula for most of the important non-Trek people in my life to get on board, and that's fucking cool.[/Tilly]

That’s a wide-ranging group. Did they all come to watch parties?

Gosh, I hope not! Haha. That's would be a circus. No, they're just all people who know me as The Guy Who Knows Star Trek, so I get to enjoy hearing about their experiences with the show over time.

Special effects are certainly the best on any Trek show, but as a whole I wouldn't call it 'awesome'. Characters are bland, the premise is confusing and it all relies on the comfort blanket of the familiar and nostalgic 1960s original series Spock-Kirk era.

I agree. I’m one of those that really really doesn’t like the show. Watching Trek since 1980s. Of course I watch every episode but it pains my heart, I think the writing is awful, as with all other Fuller/Kurtzman projects (American Gods/Transformers- why would it be good!!??) majority of actors dreadful and overall, as someone else said in this thread, the show is completely charmless. I appreciate there are fans that love it but every time I see Stamets, Hugh, Tyler or Tilly I want to throw up. Even Michael (why!!) over-acts in every frame. I can’t understand a word Michelle Yeoh is saying. It doesn’t feel like Star Trek to me because I think the show was motivated by CBS wanting to compete in the streaming market not because of love of trek. Anson Mount is the only thing in the whole 2 seasons that feels Star Trek. And that is nothing to do with Discovery is it? He’s a huge fan. When you get cookie cutter JJ Abrams disciples show-running series they are plot based soap operas that are bland with big reveals and bigger special effects. This is not Star Trek. When you get casting and characters chosen because of neo-liberal values filling diversity quotas the only people that suffer are the viewers. We get it Stamets is gay (so hilariously counter intuitive to reducing a character to his sexuality in the interest of diversity ) you’re preaching to the converted most Star Trek fans are in essence tolerant people. It’s so patronising. I can’t believe Fuller worked on DS9 and Voyager. No idea why you wouldn’t get BB to update Trek...

And the original show was motivated by Desilu wanting to sell a show to NBC, VOYAGER was created to help launch the fledging UPN network, etc. Star Trek has never been provided strictly as a public service, even though, of course, there have always been creative impulses at work as well.

Art and commerce have "motivated" Star Trek since it first debuted on NBC. DISCO is no different.
