What were your first thoughts on 'Discovery'?

I liked Georgiou. Then she died. Disliked Burnham but tried to give her a chance. Enjoyed the action, disliked the casting of Sarek, the dreadful Klingon stuff and the aesthetics not looking anything at all like TOS era Trek. Got over Georgiou's death by enjoying Lorca. Then he turned out to be evil. And died. Enjoyed Tilly and Stamets but Tilly became incredibly annoying in Season 2 and Stamets is basically a c list character these days. Ended the season sick to death of Burnham and her crying and arrogance. That hasn't changed but Pike has improved Season 2 a lot (but will leave the show just like Georgiou and Lorca) and I enjoyed the Talosians/Vina and Control stuff. Enjoying Mirror Georgiou but, again, she's temporary.

All in all, I'd say I had a good first impression that was degraded over time but has improved based on Season 2. Season 1 is a mess in my opinion. I've never watched a show where the lead character is the worst thing about it until Discovery.

I liked the Klingons but hated, hated the subtitles. Not the fact that they *needed* subtitles, but that they used this weird center-justified serif font which made the text hard for me to read.

I think I miss Philippa Georgiou, it would have been nice to see her in more than the very first episodes.

Lorca and Georgiou commanding the Discovery, that might have been nice.

What was your first impression about this series?

I'm curious because I'm only few episodes in. I got Netflix, finally, and started few days ago.

I think it's too early for anyone to judge a series based on few episodes, but I think a Trek series starting with a war is a bit questionable. Then again, Federation hasn't always been in good terms with the Klingons so here's somekind of explanation for that. The war thing doesn't have to last the whole series or whole season. But, don't tell me how the story will continue, spoiler alert.

When compared to, for example TNG, I think Disco is too dark. How about more lights on the bridge so crew could see better which button to press.

And the lens flares.. there were some in the beginning, I wonder how that is going to end up, don't like it, at all.

I thought it was dour and joyless and filled with unlikable people, and got too close to "grimdark" territory. Thankfully, Season 2 fixed that.

To me "reboot" would imply that this could be a completely different history and world from what we've seen before.

I just prefer to think of it as the same TOS world that has been visually reimagined and updated for modern day audiences.

That's a nice, succinct way to put it.

Season 1
First impression - cheers for the diverse human crew, cheers that the uniforms looked more like people working in space than the early TOS and TNG uniforms and cheers for no goody two shoes 'we're so righteous TNG humans.
Thumbs down for too many humans on the bridge, Starfleet is either a UFP force or NASA in space, it should not be both

Season 2
Well its much better than season 1

Loved the walking in the desert and Georgiou making the insignia in the sand.

I wondered if that might have far-reaching implications for the whole series....I wondered if there was a hidden meaning that would only be found much later.

Quoting myself here because I started this thread and this is what I've found so far.

I think it's too early for anyone to judge a series based on few episodes.

I've watched up to episode 8, 'Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum'.
I'm not sure this series is my thing, at least so far. It has nice moments but overall....

Maybe it'll get better on season 2 like people here have said.

But there's something good too, actors are good. Jason Isaacs (Lorca) is great.

I'm at the beginning of season 2, one or two episodes in, I'm not sure as I write this.

Disco is just so grim. Why is the ship so dark on the inside? On the Orville the ship is bright, not trying to set a mood with barely any lights. And the topics are more "trekky" on Orville.

Although, latest Orville episode I watched was directed by Jonathan Frakes, written by Joe Menosky and starred Marina Sirtis and Tony Todd.

EDIT - I skipped most of the mirror universe stuff on season 1, I find the whole mirror thing silly.

Comparing series and movies might not be a fair comparison when it comes to lighting, movies are different no matter what.

Well, Discovery takes its visual style from the movies starting with TMP, not from the TV shows which were designed to match how TV shows were lit at the time. Much TV these days, especially streaming scifi takes its cinematography from film, not from TV series that were made 30 or 50 years ago.
