What We Left Behind - Documentary Update Confirms *Some* HD Remastering

I've seen some interesting comments from TNG and Voyager fans, thinking they have documentaries on the way as well. They just don't get it, DS9 was a unique series for the time; it didn't get the ratings but the Niners embraced it as the original series fans did in the '60s & '70s.

Are they ready to hear the truth about their preferred series?

TNG had it's documentary: Chaos on the Bridge. It documents very well how the series was put together.

Voyager may well have a documentary on the way. Are its fans ready to hear about the misery among the writers or the way a certain actor was ostracized? Are they ready to hear how the producers took a generally conservative approach in order to protect the series and service the network? Are they ready to put their own money into making it a feature length piece ? Will the producers find creative ways to generate interest in the doc?

I actually expect to see at least a few more TNG Documentaries. In fact it would make lots of sense with a Picard show on the way. I wouldn't be surprised if Voyager and Enterprise get one as well but it might have to be crowd sourced. I am curious though about how much interest is out there in seeing Voyager get the HD treatment. That issue I feel played a role in DS9 getting one. I would like to see Voyager get the HD treatment as well because I like the show for the most part but if I had to choose I would easily pick DS9 over it for that treatment. Enterprise doesn't have the HD issue so it will have to get it's doc purely on someone being interested in telling that story.

Voyager did have a lot of drama to make an interesting doc but I doubt Berman would be willing to participate.

I don't know. He might want to get his side out when people start pointing fingers at him for things that went wrong.

Yeah, Rick Berman's tell-all memoir is high on my Trek wish-list. Even something like the Solow/Justman book would be a great read, but I sense Rick is just too discreet and keen to safeguard Gene's legacy.

It's a shame because he's let the fans and others knock him for years without ever really getting his side of the story across.

TNG had several documentaries; each season on bluray has a 1-2 hour documentary, split into multiple parts. Between those and Chaos on the Bridge, I don't think there's too many depths left to plumb.

Hey that hasn't stopped World War II Doc's. I think we have had ever aspect of that war documented and explored so far and we know more will keep coming.

Forget HD! Voyager fans want to see Voyager in 4K!

Aside from firing Ron Jones I have no real beef with Rick Berman. Im not a fan of Voyager or Enterprise but I appreciate his contributions to TNG and DS9, which he co-created. Rick Berman cannot trash Gene Roddenberry. TNG was handwrapped and placed into Rick Berman's hands by Gene. He could easily given it to Robert Justman but he chose Berman instead.

Well, Gene pissed off Bob Justman and sidelined him. Rick was the studio guy and the one Gene couldn't really get rid of. He was lucky Berman turned out to be the ideal steward for Star Trek.

I think RIck Berman did a good job but he overstayed his welcome. He should have been gone before they did "Voyager." He was around at a time when tv was starting to evolve and he was unwilling to really evolve with it. He was really a 80's kind of steward when that was not what tv was about anymore.

And bringing us full circle in this conversation, we're lucky Rick had other things on his mind when DS9 thankfully broke away from his template.

One of the things that excites me about this documentary is that finally we can have something on the trek era I grew up with. The 90s was a fun time to be a trek fan, with 2 series going on concurrently and the movies coming out every other year. It was almost like the MCU was now.

Unfortunately when it comes to behind the scenes there isn’t much surrounding this time. It’s either about the original or the early days of TNG. Yeah you have Pillers insurrection book and the TNG blue rays but I think this documentary is really the first that will really get into what made DS9 tick. I hope Voyager has one too.

As for Rick Berman, I would love a tell all book from him. He was basically the Alex Kurtzman of the franchise for 20 years yet he gets so much crap from so many people. I would love to see his reflection, especially since 15 years has past since the end of Enterprise. Yeah you might get the hardcore critics and maybe some backlash but I would read it with an open mind.

I don't know if you own these I would suggest the Deep Space Nine Companion. Mark Altman was also wrote the books "The first 25 years of Trek" and the "The next 25 years of Trek" and have tons of detail. Also the Captain's Logs books which have behind the scene stuff. The first one with TOS and TNG and the second with Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager." I also believe the Memory Alpha website and even Wikipedia has some good info as well.

The TNG bluray behind the scenes special features were fabulous. In addition to the new documentary, I'd like to see mini DS9 documentaries along those lines.

DS9 Companion was my bible. As was my TNG one, but the DS9 one was a lot more detailed, and surprisingly honest in places.

Just had my e-mail confirming the 25th April early streaming access. I hope I'm available at some point. Oh who am I kidding, of course I will. It will fill the gap Discovery left when it finished. ;)

I've lost count the number of times I've read the DS9 Companion. Truly the example for all other series companion books to follow.

The documentary will be available tomorrow evening for early backers of the Indiegogo campaign. However, because I'm seeing Endgame the following morning, I probably won't get to it until Friday evening at the earliest.
