It is obvious that Control has no sensors and definitely would never look at worlds where life might exist but not yet be technologically active.
Well, I didn't write the episodes... But it makes sense in terms of it could use signals to hack stuff there, and replace people via their tech interfaces. It would have to go physically looking with ships and probes, which doesn't seem to be its main objective or MO.

500 years later and Terralysium still has no technology?

Actually, it DOES have some: The power cell that lights up the church. Why couldn't Control detect that?
Technology might imply complex versus simple. No transtators or subspace fields and the like.

On the other hand, combing the galaxy for all sentient life seems like a bigger job than, say, popping down to the chemist’s.

All of Burnham's goodbyes left me somewhat cold, Pike's farewell, on the other hand, I found quite emotional. I know some people will say it's because Pike is better than Burnham, I think it's actually because we know Pike is leaving and we don't want to see him go. If we don't get a Pike series I'll be rather upset.

It's even tougher than that, as any technological civilization Control encounters is likely to just be a product of a deranged imagination anyways.

Can't it be both?

After conducting my re-watch I am severely tempted to knock my rating down a notch (from "4" to "3")!

There is nothing quite so anti-climatic as a gaggle of people wallowing in their own potential martyrdom. Only Captain Pike is quietly going about his duty and he's the one who knows what horrific "fate worse than death" awaits him!

Pretty much Pike and Georgiou are the only two truly heroic characters in the group. Michelle Yeoh and Anson Mount have effortless chemistry with everyone they have scenes with. Georgiou's suggestion of firing a torpedo into a nova was indeed a good idea.

Obviously caffeinated Queen Amidala (aka Me Hani Ika Hali Ka Po) is still onboard Discovery. FYI, Spumoni ice cream is my absolute favorite!

I'm guessing it's going to have a Lost In Space (Netflix Reboot) type ending next week with Discovery and crew ending up someplace weird with the audience then having to wait a year to find out where and/or when. Though overall I think Discovery is great, I do hope season 3 is it.

Yeah, honestly it all must be kinda odd for Pike as a character, considering he absolutely, positively knows he must survive the battle ahead to meet his true fate. Thus he must be much, much more secure in the outcome than anyone else. Even if that security comes from knowledge of the horrible future which awaits him later.

So for those who feel that this episode dragged a bit and didn't go anywhere, Michelle Paradise explains why:
It was originally just supposed to be one episode. We had thirteen episodes for the season and in trying to wrap up all the storylines and all the mythology, we developed the story — and the story was huge and the outline was huge and we realized it is not one episode of television. So, in order to do everything justice that we wanted to do – including all the character moments that we wanted to have – so, fortunately, our network partners said “have fun with another episode.” So, we did….There was so much story to tell and so much to wrap up and we really wanted to wrap up the characters’ journeys over the season and to try to squeeze that into one episode, we couldn’t have done it justice.
I remember when it was announced that they had extended the season by one episode, I knew that it meant one got stretched into two. Now we know which one it was.

I agree. For me it boiled down partly to Burnham having soooo many "goodbyes." After the first one there was definitely diminishing returns with each one that followed. I still like and respect the character of Michael Burnham and the actor, Sonequa Martin-Green, however, I feel the writing was awful in this respect.

Christopher Pike's moment carries a weight because he and we know his ultimate reward. Even factoring in the Talosians taking him and allowing him to live an illusion of normalcy the horror will still be there. He knows the spoils of victory will be for others to enjoy. Pike is the very definition of stoic while most everyone else wears everything on their sleeves.

I too would very much like to see more of Captain Pike.

Note: "Blah, blah, blah …" inserted by me

Sorry, I'm not buying what she's trying to sell.

All those oversentimental goodbyes are not justified and could easily have saved 10 minutes or more of runtime (at least they felt like they could). Definitely feeling they would have been better off doing a tighter movie length season finale.

I like how last week they managed to make him more than just the heroic leader. It would have been very easy to just have him take the crystal and seal his fate. But instead, they gave him that moment where he has to steel himself and reaffirm the values he swore to uphold. This gets both his heroism and his humanity across. I feel that Pike is the best-written character this season, and he is the one with the simplest story around him. Sometimes you don't need to make your lead be the previously unknown sibling of an established character, or have them be the doppelganger of a dead captain, you just need to make them a good, likable person and that's enough.

It seems to me that with the large size of Discovery and the obvious amount of energy it must take for its impulse engines, there's probably more than enough energy left over when in idle to power the EMERGENCY ESCAPE Platforms, since they are only used while standing still, in an Emergency.
;)

I think they missed an opportunity for a cool scene by including artificial gravity in the escape corridors. They should have been floating through those things.

Also, why on Earth didn't they just have them come out of the bottom of Discovery instead of the side? They could have been about a third as long that way and it's not like it matters in space if they go out the side or the bottom.

I'm betting our new showrunner had a big hand in those, so we can expect more sentimentality next year.
