And in Star Trek the first sleeper ships made space travel practical that same year.

I don't remember if that's the exact quote but Marla MaGivers said something to that effect in "Space Seed" just before they woke up Khan.

On the contrary -- sleeper ships were in use as far back as 1996, when Khan was exiled. 2018 was the year that sleeper ships were abandoned because faster interplanetary drives had been invented.

Hopefully a secret Jaeger program has been in place for a while now - Pacific Rim's first kaiju attack takes place in 2020 against Anchorage, Alaska. I live in Anchorage. Not looking forward to next year.

 

Also, Reign Of Fire would indicate that England is gonna have a dragon problem on it's hands in 2020.
