The Far Side

Now that the paperback version is finally available on amazon (at only $50) I would recommend that everyone here order a copy of The Complete Far Side by Gary Larson. I think the world has been a little emptier since we lost his perspective on things. What are your favorite panels?
My favourite was always the guy on safari, with a checklist of animals to see, and when it got to elephant, the checklist was spoiled, and his head was pressed in to an elephant shaped footprint. I think it was in the third collection.

I also liked nature abhors a vacuum. And stackable livestock.

And the monsters beneath the young Gary’s bed, and one says to the other, “Larry, I think there’s something on the bed”

I need to buy this I think.

i have not (yet) seen teh ones you mentioned. I love the one called "Inconvenience stores" and the kid is in the store but the shelves are WAY to high for him to reach, and the store clerk is reading the paper because he does not care

Soooo many to choose from!

For me, it's got to be either the "Pull" sign on the School for the Gifted cartoon or the "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear" cartoon.

Gary Larson was really a genius (or maybe it was all the caffeine he drank at night). He retired before the strip got stale, and he also stopped selling calendars because he didn't want to mooch $ from people forever

I don't know why, but this one has always been one of my favorites:

The ones with cavemen were some of my favorites...

"Gak Eisenberg invents the first and last silent mammoth whistle."

(a caveman is teaching a class and displaying a picture of a huge tail with three spikes)
"Now this end is called the thagomizer...after the late Thag Simmons."

I dunno, there's just something really hilarious about giving cavemen first and last names. :guffaw:

turns out that paleontologists never had a name for the Stego's tail assembly, so they actually do call it the Thagomizer. My favorite caveman cartoon has a primitive theme park and when they enter "Future world" one of the exhibits is a painting of a guy lighting a match. A guest is like "yeah right"... Or the panel labelled "Primitive UFO's" and the cavemen look up to see a UFO made of rocks and sticks

Here's one that never was actually printed:
- A group of aliens shaped like fire hydrants, and one of them has 'something' dripping off him. There is a large dog nearby. One of the aliens is very upset: "'Take me to your leader,' I said...and then the most hideous thing happened!"

Some of my favorites that DID get used:

- Two aliens are trying to talk to people. One of them is sheepishly clutching an English/Alien dictionary. The other one, very angry, says "'Take me to your stove'? You idiot! Give me that book back!" :guffaw:

- Interplanetary luggage mixups. A human is pulling an unidentifiable piece of alien clothing out of a bag and saying "What the heck is this?" The alien has the human's clothes and is thinking "øod nqx fpxh ga?"

- In God's kitchen: God has a box of "EARTHQUIK" on the kitchen counter. He pulls the Earth out of the oven and thinks 'Something tells me this thing's only half baked.'

- An Indian tribe is gathered on the top of a cliff. There is a train going by, in the valley below. The chief looks at the rest of his men and says "Pardon me, boys...is that the Chattanooga Iron Horse?"

I'm pretty certain I've seen that one!
