Space Battleship Yamato 2202

So, they will (re)do the "Bolar Wars" story (most likely).

It's curious that they haven't. Seems an odd omission.
Well, when I mentioned it earlier in the thread - Ithekro mentioned is WAS a full on, released film (IE not part of either televised series); so the way to get those rights are probably different, and perhaps more expensive or have other parties involved, etc. and they may not feel the ROI on obtaining said rights would be worth it to them.

The most likely place they will head right now is in the New Voyages direction with Dessler. Other than that, its fair game due to all the changes.

Though by the end of Yamato 2202, its quite probably nearing the end of the year 2203, so if they want the next series to but just that, "Yamato 2203" than again, most of the series will take place in 2204, rather than 2203 (Yamato 2202 started in December of the year 2202, and the year ended probably by episode 10, it not sooner.) We don't know how long it took them to get to Telezart (just yet), but they rushed to get home afterward, pushing the engines hard by warping five times a day rather than three times a day. Plus the war in the Sol System was fought over probably the course of a few weeks (at most), with the end being "six months later". If the crew of Yamato follow their own traditions, the meet up at Hero's Hill was either as soon as they were all healed to go, or was the anniversary of Okita's death (December 8th, 2199), so it is likely that the end of the show takes place in December of 2203, thus not really time for a whole new series called "Yamato 2203" to take place.

"Dessler's War", an abandoned sequel concept that was originally post-Final Yamato, would be a viable plot thread to weave into a variant New Voyages plotline that could lead to some thing new, or into the Bolar Wars.

So since 2202 robbed us of some good EDF designs, I took it upon myself to update them.

he0lmBA.png

Daring-class destroyer
Length:
148 meters
Weaponry:
2x 203mm twin-mount compression shock cannon turrets
4x twin-mount heavy pulse laser turrets
4x triple-mount torpedo tubes
4x single-mount torpedo tubes
8x missile launchers
4x twin-mount pulse laser turrets
2x dispersion pulse lasers

Hood-class battlecruiser
Length:
250 meters
Weaponry:
3x 305mm twin-mount compression shock cannon turrets
2x 305mm triple-mount compression shock cannon turrets
4x quadruple-mount torpedo tubes
1x octuple-mount missile launcher turret
16x missile launchers
2x twin-mount pulse laser turrets

Size chart with other EDF ships. Note I increased the size of the frigate and Dreadnought to 148 and 300 meters respectively, as I feel these figures work much better.

Nice pics!

Re: "Dreadnought" (or "Dreadnaught" as some call it) - I guess I'm too much of a Treknology traditionalist. Even though I realize they likely derived this name from the HMS Dreadnought (1573) or the one from 1801, it still seems weird to me that it's a class name and not a class type. I think maybe that's why I like the old "Borodino" nomenclature given to it from the pre-2199 days. Can't seem to shake it out of my head-canon. :)

Yeah I'm blaming this on Kobayashi. He named the one of the main battleship classes he designed in Resurrection the Dreadnought as well. What I really dislike though is that they shrunk the Dreadnought from the original design concept of 333 meters to 250. It looks so anemic compared to even the other factions' cruisers.

I've grown used to the name, but I still use "dreadnought" as a class type (eg. Domel's ship is a Zoelguut-class dreadnought). Seems more imposing than battleship.

While these would be 'Dreadnought-class' ships because the first ship in the class is named Dreadnought, it seems to also be referred to as the 'D-class' since, at least at first, all the ship had a name starting with the letter "D". All were British ship names as well. But given the hundreds to maybe a few thousand of these thing Earth built in the operational existence of the Time Fault Shipyard, they would have run out of "D" names within the first five hundred or so ships.

Episode 23 should be out from Funimation soon (if its not out already). The rest will be out weekly from now until the end of April.

Just watched episode 23 and obviously

Yuki was almost fridged, causing so much distress to the poor Kodai. Yes, something horrible happens to a woman (death, rape, whatever) and it is used just as a plot device to show the difficult emotional journey of our (male) hero. Exactly as it happened to Zwordar. Green Lanter did this 25 years ago and it was already considered sexist.

Well, they managed to change an age old SBY meme with Ep. 23.

It USED to be:

"It ain't Yamato until Yuki dies..."

NOW its:

"It ain't Yamato until Yuki lies comatose..."

I also am scared to admit I actually had some sympathy for Dessler at this point. Yes, he'as HORRIBLY screwed up, but given the situation he was put in as a young child, IDK if you could say how he turned out was his fault or the fault of anything he did. He's not evil, just driven and desperate because as he sees it, the ultimate survival of his race was made his sole responsibility; and he had less than a century to find (or Gamilaform) a suitible planet for his race.

The way they did it felt way too much like they were trying to go "DESSLER DID NOTHING WRONG" and pardon him of all the crimes he did in 2199. Even worse, he doesn't fucking grow at all in 2202. He's still the exact same person that put the events in 2199 in motion in the first place. And there's no indication at all that he's going to change his behavior.

And what does he get in return? He gets his entire empire back no problems at all, no one who'd previously had issues with him ever protesting at all, just saluting the dictator as he walks back.

He literally genocided entire planets and everyone is ok with that???
You know, it's quite similar to the all Zion's supporters that I've found on other anime forums. Zion dropped a colony on Earth killing half the human population and they are all like "Oh, you know, there is blame on both sides!".

I know it's just fiction, but there are so many (voluntary) parallels between Zion and Nazi that it's frightening finding so many enthusiasts online...

Oh the Zeon parallels are not accidental here. 2202 is written by Harutoshi Fukui (might be misspelling the first name), the screenwriter for Gundam Unicorn, which is one of the worst shows in terms of trying to 'redeem' Zeon.

Don't forget the hypocrisy lol.

"We fight for Spacenoids' Rights!"
Proceeds to genocide an entire colony of Spacenoids using gas weapons and drop the colony on Earth

No, I'm definitely NOT okay with it, but that said it was his father who turned him into the monster he became (hell, he was about to assassinate him when Dessler was 8); so yeah, I do have some sympathy for him in that respect.

I'm sorry to godwin this, but Hitler had a shitty childhood too...

Yeah, but here's the thing.

It's a retcon. It's a retcon to whitewash Dessler so people can say "but but he wasn't that bad because he has a bad backstory!"

If this backstory was in conjunction with him having some actual fucking character development, it would be more okay, but as it is? He does nothing and he gets everything back. He doesn't grow. He doesn't have some revelation that you know, just maybe he shouldn't be a dictator okay with his underlings committing genocide. It feels like they wanted to have Yamato 2 Dessler while spending the absolute bare minimum trying to fit it with 2199. Which, according to interviews with the writer, is what he was trying to do.

Maybe if they excised Kiman altogether they'd have had more time to develop Dessler lol.
