Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

Yeah, some of the concepts can be a bit weird - the ones in the TNG Tech Manual are a case in point, especially the one with the nacelles at the front flanking a central module that pulls mission-specific modules behind it like a giant T shape.
Heh... I think Atolm did some updated drawings of that one a couple of years back. He made it look really cool, compared to its original layout.

#4, I kinda wish they'd stuck closer to. The Excelsior was supposed to be a rival ship that we weren't meant to like. I think that clunkier-looking version might have done a better job at pulling that off than the uber-sleek version that we got.

the worker bee and ISS shenzhou arrived today.

not to be all hyperbolic, but i think the worker bee is one of the best models eaglemoss has produced. the detail, the paint application, the transparent plastic, it all works to create a model that is the closest translation i've seen of screen-used CG files to physical model:

Looks like the thing Michael Douglas used to find Michelle Pfeiffer in the quantum realm.

  1. First of all: As always, thanks for the high quality photos!
  2. As somebody who claims "2001: A spae Odyssee" as his favourite movie, it took me WAY too long to figure out these worker bees are essentially the "EVA pods" of the "spaceship Discovery" from 2001....
  3. In the show, these pods are completely plastic white, the models are withered gray? I think that's not exactly screen accurate, but IMO the model looks even better than on tv
  4. These worker bees are probably my favourite addition of DIS to the Trek lore. They just make so. much. sense. for a spaceship to carry around. It was always weird that they only ever had either spacesuits or big shuttles to operate in space. These things are perfect. (It was always the budget to blame - ENT had similar pods, too! But the addition of the claws really does WONDERS)

same here. it took until i read the magazine and they say explicitly that it was designed with the 2001 EVA pots in mind. apparently the worker bee (which is labeled CMU in tiny letters indicating it's actually "cargo management unit" like in every other series) was designed for a major sequence in the pilot where burnham jumps into the back of one, rather than jumping through space as in the final product. which again is reminiscent of 2001: a space odyssey.

yeah, they do look a little whiter on screen than in person, but the magazine's assets show it similarly silver. in fact, the model replicates specific weathering from the CGI model, so not sure if the discrepancy just comes down to lighting or not.

i'm really happy with the model (if it wasn't obvious). currently working on a 3D printed cargo container like this:

I just got my V'Ger today. I've been waiting on this for a long time!

1. I really wish they'd flared the tail fins a little more, like the digital model.
2. It looks a little bit like a xenomorph sex toy

Good times.

The fourth photo actually shows two different models. The top photo shows a side view of a ship that isn't the same as the ship in the other three views.

Yknow you’re right! I never noticed that until you just pointed that out. I’m going to have to split those up. So I guess this means there were actually five study models! Good eye...
