This entire post is full of BS for a number of reasons, especially the dig against Johnson; as I have pointed out previously, it was George Lucas, not Rian Johnson, who conceptualized Luke as a disillusioned hermit.

Gee, I can't wait until the next Star Wars trilogy comes out and people say how much it sucks and that the Sequel Trilogy "wasn't so bad."

Mark my words, friends. It'll happen.

Yes, it will. I'm amazed by the amount of love poured out on the PT now, when I can recall walking out of theaters with friends so annoyed by what they saw. The high point was the fan documentary called "The People vs. George Lucas" (or something to that effect) to rail against the crimes committed against the franchise.

Now, I face the constant railing against Disney and their evil attempts to make money on this franchise. Or how they just don't "get it" and what Star Wars is all about. The sad part is the lack of awareness that this attitude is one of the reasons that drove Lucas to retire.

    But, the misinformation abounds...

The prequels were never perfect in my mind. But I don’t hate them. I find the “raped my childhood” analogy to be the beginning of this continued low point within fandom. It’s gotten much worse with actually harassing celebs because of their involvement.

Here’s a hot take for the haters: You don’t like something, go find something else to do. OR be civil discussing it. There’s a whole world out there of things to explore. Maybe Star Wars isn’t for you. Or Star Trek: Discovery. Or Captain Marvel. Or whatever the next thing will be.

Yes, indeed. It wasn't until I discovered online fandom that I found out just how much I was supposed to "hate" the PT. Now, I don't care for them, but hate is a strong word. Certainly, no one deserves the harassment that has been heaped on them.

Pretty much, yes. A franchise is not ours for life. If it goes past what I'm interested in then guess what? I move on. I saw almost all of the stage 1 or whatever Marvel films, but that has waned. It simply is too much to keep up on. I didn't get all the way through VOY, or ENT, and only started on TNG much later.

Not every facet of the franchise is for every member of the audience and production teams are under zero obligation to try and fulfill our whims.

Mark has shared a lot of what he was told about George's sequel trilogy and it was going to be quite different from what we got. Upon watching The Force Awakens George Himself said they went in a different direction from what he had in mind. So I don't know where all this stuff is coming from that suggests the plot was mirroring George's plans to a T. It's not. In fact it didn't even flow according to what JJ had in mind after TFA. And Episode IX isn't following what the plan was under Colin Trevorrow. And even with JJ they're improvising on the set. So not exactly that well thought-through.

^ Where did I say or imply that the Sequel Trilogy has followed Lucas' blueprints(s) to a T? All I have said is that the concept of Luke as a disillusioned hermit was originated by Lucas himself, which it was.

I also reject the notion that Rian Johnson came in and took The Last Jedi in a direction that was somehow contrary to what JJ had set up in TFA because we have been expressly told that such is not the case.

You say that because that's what's happening with the Prequels, however, I disagree. I think you are going to see a "Life of Brian" type of schism develop between the Lucas Era and the Disney Era whereby Disney will be painted as the gluttonous Romans who exploited Star Wars to ruination (because they are) while George Lucas will forever be revered as King Arthur, ruler of Camelot until 2012. Scholars will likewise recognize that dividing line noting all sense of a thematic narrative was excised by the Disney corporation and the material drastically dumbed down.

The kid with the broom shows absolutely nothing that we didn't know already. He just shows that there are other Force-sensitives out there. But we already knew that had to be the case. In fact, it's kind of baked into the whole concept of the Jedi and their practices ( specifically midichlorian testing ) as shown in the PT. No one ever said you had to be a Skywalker to use the Force. Obi-Wan and Yoda weren't Skywalkers.

Yet everyone keeps wanting Rey to be Luke's daughter or Kenobi's granddaughter.

    I don't.

I want her to realize her destiny as an assistant manager of the busiest 7-11 in the galaxy.

Dream big or go home I always say.

Mostly because the stated format was "The Skywalker Saga", thus it seems reasonable that there would be a Skywalker Protagonist again (Anakin, Luke (and Leia as we later found out))

Oh, the prequels. Star Trek: Enterprise. Im basing this on the fact that as fans, we are all fickle. We do tend to look more positively as time goes on. If you look at our history, you can see this. I, for one, think that the fact that George Lucas made a boatload of cash over licensing. He did this in order to expand his empire (pardon the pun). I don’t see any difference in what Disney is doing. It’s called capitalism.

Let me be clear: I absolutely prefer the OT. But I don’t necessarily believe that the PT or the ST are as crap as some. But I also know that I grew up with the OT. I know I hold it in a regard. This may be unpopular, but the movies as a whole aren’t really all that great. They’re fun popcorn, children’s movies. And I love almost every moment of them. But there isn’t a ton of groundbreaking filmmaking in any Star Wars movie.

And frankly I find your analogy to be far too dramatic.

Precisely so. Lucas was neither prophet nor saint. He crafted entertainment that he would want to watch and told the story he wanted to tell while making money on it. That is neither evil nor horrible, as we, the audience, have demonstrated a willingness to spend money on it.

Hell, there were thousands of Jedi around during the Republic, and we saw a ton of them in the prequels and The Clone Wars, there's no way they could all be Skywalkers. Especially not when some of them look like Oppo Rancisis, Kit Fisto and Plo Koon.

While I'm glad that the sequals aren't all about the skywalkers, I can understand why many would think that Rey was one. Lucas pretty much made sure that Episodes 1-6 followed that narrative .

Far as what Lucas would have wanted , who knows? The man has contradicted himself so many times over the years that it's hard to take him seriously. Here's an article from last year about what Lucas supposedly wanted to do with the sequals.

Mmmmmmmmmmm......No thank you. I'm still glad that he's been retired and no longer in control of the franchise. Now with Disney gaining complete control of the OT with the Fox acquisition maybe we can finally get copies of the movies we saw growing up before Lucas went through his revisionist phase.

Yeah it was George's idea to make Luke so disillusioned that he left millions die. No that was all Johnson.
