People keep saying that Nhan still had one of hear breathing apparatuses, but she didn't. Airiam pulls one off, then throws her across the room. Another must have gotten dislodged by that, as when she's laying on the floor, both are missing; she is desperately trying to reach one of them. She eventually succeeds, and that's the one she's holding on her face in the end.

I didn't even notice the transporter plot hole as I was watching. In hindsight, a single line of dialogue could have fixed it, but I presumed

1. Airiam was far too dangerous to bring back to the Discovery
2. The high-security nature of S31 and the presence of Control was preventing a beam-out from that location.

if i were control and needed to have my avatar close i'd killed all beaming possibilities as soon as my avatar was there

... but then i also beamed those other two suits into space at the same time (preferably right between those mines)

but then we had one of those david rasche / early years situations, and i guess the showrunners wouldn't want that

Could Nhan's helmet have given her an atmosphere to breathe if she had activated the helmet?

only if that other stuff from those breezers is deactivated when the helmet is closed. it also means nobody else can use her supply (if she's dead or someone other's supply is broken) and that is standard for anyone carrying around canned air in any series.

from a logistical pov it's way easier to have her breezers work all the time and fill her suit with the standard mix, because otherwise you needed to include secondary breezers in the suit in order to not poisen the supply for external use.

so no, i don't think that would work

Wow - I never saw that one! I loved that show, but didn't get to watch much of it since I was in elementary school. That's.... quite a cliffhanger.

It could? Don't assume every piece of equipment can work miracles. Her two augmentation devices were supposed to be the foolproof compensation and while I could see such EVA suits being on the 1701 (where she is assigned) - they may not have been available on th Discovery for her temporary assignment.

It crossed my mind while watching that Nhan was not being paid attention. But it equally crossed my mind that perhaps the point of not showing her was to heighten the tension.

Yep. I'm pretty sure it was a deliberate choice to ignore Nhan so we would think she was out of the picture, so her last minute save would be be more effective.

I'm going to reiterate my tuppence worth from other threads
I really believe we haven't seen the last of Airiam, don't ask me to rationalise that feeling, I just have a hunch.
It was really negligent, as has been pointed out earlier by Timo, that they never phasered her to make sure she was a goner.

From the trailer, it kinda-sorta looks like we are going to see a funeral for Airiam in the next episode.

So we are definitely NOT done with her yet.

They made a thing about how all her memories had been "backed up"

After they showed her unconscious and her screen offline, I thought she was dead -- which is what I think the writers intended for viewers to think.

EDIT: This is the second time that the writers have faked us out on the possible demise of Nhan, the Red-Shirt.

When Burnham was startled by the floating Tellarite corpse, did anyone else think it looked as though Airiam had raised her rifle at Burnham's back (the red dots had appeared in her eyes a few moments earlier), then quickly pretended she'd been surprised too and had raised her rifle instinctually? Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.

I have to say, I've watched this episode 3 times and each time that moment Airiam is blasted out the airlock has been a tear-inducing gut-punch. The moments leading up to that were tense and exciting as well, and well played by the actors, both on the station and on Disco. As other have mentioned, it would have been more significant had we seen more interaction of the other characters who were apparently her very close friends, but at least we did see a lot of character from this character that we'd never seen before, like her memory-deletion process, her closeness with Tilly, Owo & Detmer, and the fact she has a fun sense of humour and actually has the ability to smile. I keep thinking back to Season 1's "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad" where we saw Tilly and Detmer at the big party; it would have been fun if the writers had dropped Airiam in there too, standing around awkwardly, maybe Tilly breezing over and telling her to "Go dance! I know you want to dance!"

Another interesting note is that after Airiam's system failure and cut-to-black, the end credits rolled right away. Usually on SPACE here in Canada, there's a commercial break before the credits roll. Perhaps they did it this way to allow the tragedy to resonate and stay with us rather than have the sad moment immediately disrupted by a slew of commercials.

Um, I think that's just going with the standard SF trope that permanent deaths are rare! You're just going with the odds on that one!
