Spoilers First hand behind the scenes information

Originally it was supposed to be filmed in Canada like discovery but in the Missisauga location. Patrick didn't want to leave L.A. though and pushed that it be filmed there instead. This is actually a bad thing for fans though as the reason the Discovery sets are so impressive is the following reasons:

1) The studio space at Pinewood is MUCH larger
2) The US dollar goes farther in Canada
3) The taxes are cheaper in Canada
4) The talent from set design to construction is cheaper. Extra's too.

I'm sure the tax incentive Picard show got from California alleviated at least some of those financial worries. $15.6 million supposedly.

It looked good to the average lifelong Trek fan. It likely didn't look good to the average viewer, who would have seen it and said "Oh, hoaky 60s sci-fi". Discovery doesn't have to hook the former audience, but they do the latter.

Oh, and PS: I thought the bridge looked hoaky in IaMD, and I am a lifelong Trek fan. It was quaint and fun in "Relics", and fit with the theme of the show --- outdated things. Not so in ENT, I felt.
There's nothing structurally wrong with the set, in terms of layout, angles, function etc. Even STD uses the basic design.

Backlit stills for overhead displays and the specifics of interfaces and materials are what date it.

I also mentioned that there is no washroom on the shuttles. Again they said the discussion they had regarding it was that the transporter could be used to beam the waste right out of your body. LOL. Seriously though.

A "Restroom" in Star Trek was NEVER seen until the brig scene in the feature film STV:TFF - no one seemed to be having any issues in the 23 years of Trek that existed up to that point. ;)

We actually don't know that the DSC shuttles don't have a 'head'. It could be hidden away somewhere.
a trap door in the floorboards, gravity plating and a reliable force field are all you need. Might have to take the ship through a wash on the way back though.

In Japan people "go" in tiny holes in the ground. There could easily be a recess that opens up in the shuttle floor.

Or, as fans have theorized since at least the 70's, they may well beam it out of you.

I imagine it could be something like the submarine in Spykids. that had a toilet that stowed and unstowed with the push of a button. Although I'm thinking one on the shuttle might include some privacy enclosure of some sort.

Yeah, but also in Japan they have incredibly high-tech toilets that automatically...umm...do some stuff for you.

I was on Saipan and Guam a few years back staying in hotels frequented by Japanese and South Korean tourists, and I had to view the directions on the toilet to be able to fully use all of the great features it offered.

I thought we saw what might be a bathroom in Janice Rand's quarters in Charlie X. I have recollections of her walking into her chambers from another room, in which you can see a hairbrush. Am I imagining this? I checked the Trek Core screencaps, but can't corroborate this memory.

They all had a mirror and dressers. In TOS S3 - "The Tholian Web" I believe you see a hairbrush in Uhura's quarters too. ;) But most people don't use a dresser to do their "other business'. ;)

Maybe also Uhara's quarters in Tholian Web. Honestly, I'm not sure if we saw a separate room or just her mirror in the main part of the quarters...I'm just throwing that out for people. I'll have to check it out later, along with Rand's quarters in Charlie X.

EDIT TO ADD: I don't type fast enough, 'Noname Given' already mentioned the points of my post above.

I want one of those toilets. I feel like we've lost the toilet wars. We didn't even know they were being fought. Stupid 19th century toilet design.

I'll get an incinolet and show them all.

Take that poop, 1200 degrees of solid waste devastation. It may lack the ah.. self.. cleaning features of the Japanese toilets, but if we're going to move towards a Star Trek future, it's going to require sacrifices, as well as scaring the bejeezus out of kids potty training. Incinolet is the NX-01 of Star Trek waste management.

Unless you like the sound of Tiny Tim...
