The red angel plot is reminding me of the infamous JJ Abrams mysterious box. Alex Kurtzman is a close friend of Abrams and helped write the two trek movies Abrams directed. the red angel story line is been hyped a lot, I see it everywhere in many media sites.

It is starting to make me worry that whatever is the red angel, would be a let down and another empty mysterious box similar to JJ Abrams movies and tv shows (Lost, Cloverfield, Into Darkness)

It would probably help if you explained what this ‘box’ is you’re describing, for all the people who have never seen Lost, Cloverfield, etc.

Or even for those who have seen the etc. What mystery letdown was there in Into Darkness?

Does "Lorca-is-Mirror-Lorca!" count, say? It's only a letdown in these parts for those who a) hoped to see a crazy edgy war veteran story or b) guessed a bit early. And the latter is just an artifact of how they watched the show. Binge-watching in a weekend would have preserved the effect, folks!

I think that this season has surpassed the first insofar as the guesses people have made to date about the series have mostly proven false, while last time around the major "twists" were so heavily telegraphed that many people figured them out five episodes into the season.

I'm not that concerned about the ultimate reveal this time because honestly they haven't been building it up that much. The clip from the trailers with Spock talking about a threat to all life in the galaxy hasn't happened yet. It's just some mystery that the Discovery is trying to figure out. In some episodes it only gets a few minutes of coverage. To date it's been more framing device than anything - sort of similar to how the Xindi threat was treated in Enterprise's third season.

I think it's almost 100 percent certain it will be a let down. Too many great theories and ideas out there and it just seems like no matter what, they won't do anything so cool and grand to match those theories. I think the writers will play it much more safe and status quo.

Yep, not matter what they do its a lose-lose proposition. Plenty will complain bitterly and loudly and as long as they can that its garbage compared to what they or some other fan came up with.

I'm not afraid it'll be a let down. I am, however, certain it will be a let down. The question is just how big of one, and what will it lead to (story wise, that is).

I disagree that there are "great theories and ideas out there." Virtually every speculative idea I've read has been absolute painful dog shit. They can't do any worse than that. But, if people are basing their expectations on these shitty theories, and they don't pan out, yeah....there's bound to be disappointment.

So, I have no expectations whatsoever. I'm a "journey" not a "destination" kind of guy, so I'll be fine no matter what.

People jack their expectations so high that they can't help but be disappointed. It's a really sad phenomenon.

Fan theories are so dangerous when it comes to expectations.

Look at the backlash in the SW franchise when Snoke didn't have some inane backstory (like being Mace Windu) and there was no big reveal on Rey's parents (like it being Palpatine).

All I can say is:

1. I wish people would enjoy the journey. People love to wing theories out there so they can be "right," but man do they get pissed (and blame the writers, of all things) when they are "wrong."

2. Thank heavens the fans aren't writing the show by committee. Most of the fan theories are horrifyingly bad.

The only real "theory" I've seen is "It's Burnham", with the odd sprinkling of "It's Zora". The rest are ridiculous ideas that aren't even remotely going to be true, e.g. that it's Future Guy or something similar.

My wife believes it is Lorca.

I personally hope its the offspring of Burnham and a Picard/V'Ger genetically grown organism who has been assimilated by the Borg and is doing what he's doing for the good AND bad of the universe. Oh, and its secretly Future Guy.

Thats the only way that all will be happy.

:p

Agreed. Fan theories are a bunch of baloney. There's a reason why television programmes are written by professional writers who do this for a living and know what they're doing.
