Read the last 2 pages of this thread and had to triple check that it was an Orville thread and not a TNG thread.

To get things back on track....

I have to wonder why Yaphit didn't hand out weapons to as many people as possible intstead of retrieving just one and giving it to Bortus? They probably stood a good chance of re-taking the ship if multiple people were armed.

Seems unlikely. Multiple people were armed when the Kaylons first boarded, and the fight was still a walkover. You wouldn't have surprise for very long, with Kaylons stationed through the corridors. Your entire fighting force would be moving out from one small area that could easily be cut off and vented to space. There are children in the group who'd get caught in the crossfire -- we only saw Tye, Marcus, and Topa, but we know from previous episodes that they aren't the only children aboard.

But finally, and most crucially, retaking the Orville wasn't the primary objective. The primary objective was to save the Union -- to get a message to Union Central, and to bring in allies if possible. Even if the crew had somehow managed to retake the Orville at this point, they would still be surrounded by Kaylon ships. They'd go the way of the Roosevelt. The Union wouldn't get advance warning, wouldn't get help, and would be crushed.

^ I also had to wonder about the EM Pulse Isaac used to disable the other Kaylons. I would think it would knock out the electronics on the Orville but I suppose it could be explained that it was specific enough that it only affected the Kaylons.

And just to add....I think The Orville should get its own sub forum, especially if it's renewed for season 3.

I believe DS9 was greenlit somewhere around 1990 or 1991. Origins for the ideas of it go as far back as late 80s when TNG started to be successful. The Maquis/Cardassian/Bajoran stuff was written around that time(90 or 91) to lead up to DS9. I think Ensign Ro was going to be introduced to be Kira's role of the 2nd officer of DS9 but she declined so they changed it to Kira/Nina. DS9 was the last thing Gene Roddenberry gave the go ahead on.

Actually no, some of that stuff you listed was not created for DS9.

For one thing it was originally it was going to be the Romulans, not the Cardassisns.

I was thinking about this because of how TNG introduced the Maquis and built up the Maquis-Cardassian conflict before DS9 premiered.

What? DS9 introduced the Maquis, though they were building off of story threads laid down on TNG (in Journey's End). Granted, TNG then went and did a Maquis episode, Preemptive Strike. DS9 then fleshed out the Maquis storyline gearing up for Voyager's premiere.

Regardless, this kind of cross-franchise continuity wasn't on the radar of TV shows in 1990, and no one was going to intentionally lay groundwork in 1990 for a show which would premiere in 1993. While hindsight might make you wish for a Sisko cameo in TBOBW2, reality could not have made that possible.

No. When the Bajorans and their conflict with the Cardassians were introduced in TNG Ensign Ro, no one knew they were essentially laying groundwork for DS9 at the time. Although a spin-off set on a space station were in the earlies of talks at this time, none of the details about where this station was or the idea that it wasn't even a Federation built station had yet been thought up.

The point at the time wasn't to retake the ship. The point was to create a distraction so that Yaphit and Ty could make a run for it unnoticed. Had Yaphit brought back multiple rifles to allow the crew to make an attempt at retaking the ship, the Kaylons would react likely by killing the entire crew besides the senior officers needed for their ruse, perhaps by shutting down the life support, which could prevent Yaphit from getting his distress signal out. Bring just one rifle for Bortus to play with makes the Kaylon realize the situation is manageable by placing a heavier guard presence in the shuttlebay and Yaphit manages to get his warning out all the same.

I would be shocked if we didn't some kind of appearances by other TNG characters before the first season of the Picard show is over. If they can't make it though one season of Discovery without bringing in Sarek and Harry Mudd, I doubt the Picard show will be able to make it a season without bringing in Worf and/or Riker & Troi.

I'm a big fan of Carlos Bernard from 24, so I was really disappointed when they killed his character off less than 5 minutes after introducing him.

Besides, Jonathan Frakes is already confirmed to be directing an episode of Picard. He'll be in studio anyway, might as well have a cameo by Admiral Riker.

I waited until part 2 was on Hulu to watch both parts together. Pretty epic story and was done well. This show doesn't use reset buttons much so I expect Issac's situation will be fluid for the remainder of the season. Funny about his name. He should start telling people he's named after Asimov. You know, 3 laws, etc?

Is it common for them to be on starships like The Orville or is he more unusual?
I know it would probably be almost impossible thanks to the budget necessary for it, but I would love to visit his homeworld sometime. That would be a perfect story for a book or comic where budget wouldn't be an issue.
I have the same questions about Dan now that I think about it. I know he pretty much just pops up for the jokes about how awkward interacting with him is, but it could still be nice to learn a bit more about him.

Moody, single Riker is an Admiral who wants to rain on everything.

Happy, going home to a good woman every night Riker, is lucky to have made it to Captain.

Agreed. If you've read the rumor that circulated this weekend (and assuming it is credible), it looks like

the Picard show will be about the adventures of Picard and a bunch of misfit crew who are nobodies

. Fans would've rebelled and tuned out in mass, if the series is only about the adventures of a bunch of ragtag space renegades, with no appearance from Riker, Geordi, Worf, or good old Dr Crusher.

I read in another forum that their appearance will be difficult do the conflict between old Paramount and CBS licenses, but I think given that no one will tune in on a series about Picard without him and some of his old TNG gang, I guess the show-runners will just have to pay the penalty to bring at least one of them back....

I think it's the mirror image of his 24 character where Tony Almeida got shot and blown off repeatedly, yet somehow lives on, finally became the show's main baddie during its final original series

As much as I love Patrick Stewart, I would much prefer a Riker/Troi or New Frontier series right now.

I'd love the idea too. I also prefer the show-runners brought one of the Trek novel series to live TV. They do it all the time with fantasy novels like "Lord of the Rings" and "A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones." The fact it hasn't been done in the Trek-verse - despite the fact there's a group of fans out there who'll buy every new 'Titan' or 'New Frontier' novels - bothers me.

Late to post. Loved Yaphit defending Ty and then I feared the worst. Gordon in a Krill fighter. I’m glad they didn’t defeat the Kalon because I want a continuous arc and another giant space battle.

Space Battles blow out the budget.

Either they spent their wad for the season, or last week is why the season so far has been so sfx dry.

What we are going to end up with is a lot of exposition.

Like on DS9 when the crew would have a big cry over the top of the new causality reports.
