Captain Marvel (2019)

It's an idiotic response which bears no relationship to reality.
Sadly, a commentary on fandom at times. :(
Unfortunately you really can't have civil discussions with bad faith actors. It's kinda like that whole "playing chess is a pigeon" metaphor. Best to just shoo them away.
Good point.

I realized my remarks were not very helpful either and not very clear. Sorry if anyone was offended.

The problem is that the fandom seems to think she's being set up as some last minute savior (no evidence), they don't like that she's been called the most powerful hero thus far (they never complained about Thor), they don't like that she's going to be the "face" of the MCU going forward (she's clearly going to share that with Spidey and Black Panther), they don't like Brie Larson (RDJ and Chris Evans got this too, now look at how beloved they are) and Carol Danvers is somewhat divisive in the comics (so was Iron Man!).
Interesting. Curious how they felt about movies with mortal men mowing down entire armies. Now THATS unbelievable.

In this case Danvers has special powers that were passed down to her from the previous Captain Marvel. When you start dealing with magic, force or special powers then the normal rules of physics go out the window and gender means nothing. As you stated, the people who are whining about this seem to whine about everything so it seems to be more of a case of a small subset of fandom who will never be happy no matter what decision is made . If the movie turns out to be a huge hit and the character becomes popular, why not make her the face of the MCU?

Not sure why gender is an issue here. Kill Bill, the Alien franchise, Charlie's Angels, Halloween franchise, Horror in general actually, all had strong female leads who carried the film. We just had Wonder Woman recently so it's not even the first female superhero film. There's no new ground being covered here other than Marvel finally getting with the program. One side needs to get over it, while the other needs to stop trying to turn every entertainment property into some social crusade. It's just a movie. Nothing more.
It’s an issue because our society is extremely sexist and it’s taught to us as children so we just accept it as normal and natural. Have you noticed how you’re only able to think of a few examples of female heroes? (I hate the phrase strong female leads because it’s always what men assume is strong, such as overcoming a monster and generally being unemotional. Ripley is a notable exception because she drops it at times showing that she likely does it to keep others calm.) It’s mostly franchises that were made 40 years and it’s only a handful in an ocean of male characters. That’s why Captain Marvel is a big deal, she’s one of the few female heroes to actually get a movie. We have it and Wonder Woman compared to 20 male led superhero movies that came out in the last year alone, that’s it. So it does mean something to people. Women like comics, sci-fi, fantasy and horror, yet every bit of it assumes that only men are watching them so women are only used as sexual objects. When a female character is actually treated as a character, the more toxic male fans come out and attack the character by calling her a Mary Sue or harass the actress depending on how warped they are. Some even harass women who write about it. A friend of mine writes for Bleeding Edge and she is currently being harassed by these toxic fans.

You see, you don’t see a problem because none of that affects your life. Male fans aren’t really harassed for having “controversial” opinions like there should more movies with women. They don’t get accused of being fake fans or have to prove their knowledge of a franchise. They aren’t sexually assaulted or harassed at conventions, which is such a widespread issue that every has to post signs about their no tolerance policy when it comes to sexual assault and harassment during conventions. Most have a security option in their app that gives them your location so they can stop incidents. That’s why I assume that so many male fans who aren’t really toxic fail to see that there is a huge problem in fandom itself and that by trying to ignore or dismiss it they’re just helping the toxic fans and passively allowing it to continue.

I'll just stop you right there and say bullsh@t. No one in my family thinks like that, nor was I ever raised to think that women were somehow inferior to men. If that's how you were raised then I pity you.

I could have kept going and mentioned Laura Croft and Erin Brokavich along with the careers of Angelina Jolie, Sandra Bullok, Julia Roberts etc. but I thought I had more than made my point. There have been plenty of movies with female centric characters that were the main focus.

The superhero films are based off comic books which was an industry that catered to males for many years. Of course there's going to be more male superheroes. The genre was dominated by them for more than fifty years. You can't expect studios to just ignore that history of popular characters. If you find this somehow groundbreaking great. Just don't expect someone whose been watching movies for 40 plus years to have the same attitude. I've seen too many female lead movies to give a damn about that part. IMO it's irrelevant .

I just gave you a list of movies with female characters that weren't sex objects. You are focusing too much on one part of those genres.

Welcome to fandom . It's a small, tiny corner of the world where @ssholes love to flock together and be @ssholes. They are a mere drip in the large ocean of life. They dont represent the world in any which way shape or form.

No, we don't face those issues. We just face people calling us things like fat, short, stupid, poor, picked on for not being part of the cool kids etc. Everyone has their struggles so you are not unique. Mean people have been picking on others since the dawn of time. The difference is I learned to fight back against the bullies who were picking on me. (Mind you, these were in person, not words on a web page) I didnt go around painting everyone with that brush nor turn EVERY argument in existence into that. Seriously, you've done this in almost every part of this site for years whether the subject is Discovery or a movie that hasn't even been released yet. I get it, fans can be assholes and youve been treated like crap by people like that. Doesn't mean that rest of the world is like that nor is everyone who disagrees with your train of thought a bad person.

If you're going to enjoy this movie because of the gender, have at it. I'm going to enjoy it because it looks to be an interesting flick on the level of Guardians of the Galaxy. To each their own.

If the cat survives, is there any chance that it can feature next season on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?
How long do Flerkens, if Goose is in fact a Flerken, live? There's a gap of around 30 years between Captain Marvel and AoS. If he (or she, I'm not sure about Goose's sex) is a regular cat, I doubt they'd still be alive.

...unless Goose goes through a time anomaly. ;)

I never could see the images in those things either.

There's a fairly simple trick to it. You basically focus your eyes at a point behind the image, then without changing focus lean in or move back until you start to see the hidden silhouette. Takes a bit of practice for most, but I happen to be long sighted so it comes a little easier to me.

I don't think there's really any established lore on the subject, so he could have as long or as short a life as the plot dictates. They do seem to lay a lot of eggs however, so after nearly 30 years Carol could easily have one (or all) of Goose's decedents...or in the movie he's actually the main Skrull villain and dies at the end...We'll have to wait and see.

She named the cat after the dead Top Gun character because she want's the cat dead?

1/4 century old Spoilers?

##ck it.

She said the society is sexist not you or your family. Your feeling attacked is all on you. The rest of your post is similar self-conscious anxiety.

Exactly. Our society is based on gendernormes. Which is absurd. I work in a store, and the amount of customers that ask me which toys would suite a 3 year old girl, or a 5 year old boy as a gift..... Or, how many conversations I overhear that are loaded with 'that's so typically male/female of that person'..... As a society, we do it all the time.

I agree. This is something that most of us are guilty of doing. But it is definitely very societal as well. My nephew's partner is pregnant--sex unknown--and last week I was trying to buy a gift for them. All the clothes were very obviously intended for a boy or a girl (pink or blue/starship or cuddly animal patterns). It really struck home for me.

Exacty. It's marketed towards a certain way of thinking. Whenever a customer asks me that question (I need a toy for a 5 year old boy) I always ask what does the child like to do? Crafts? Play outside? Lego? Read? Then you get the child a good gift, not the 5 year old boy.

Been watching the promos of Captain Marvel and it so uninspiring. I hope it is not as nearly bland as the adverts.

Boys and girls are different...
But to what extent are they different because we, as a society, train them to be different from birth? I have twin children, a boy and a girl. My daughter likes math, science, art and playing piano and she has a "tough" personality. My son likes literature and classic rock music and is scared of spiders and horror movies. He is more concerned with clothes and appearance than she is. He gives me hugs and kisses on the cheek in public and she prefers a smile and a high-five. They are 12 years old, and they don't correspond to what society expects of them in their personalities. They each have "traditionally" masculine and feminine traits. Is there something wrong with them?

Differences are not a competitive value or even learned behaviour. They are the nature of the beast. There are intrinsically male traits and female traits. It's all good.

That is your response? Can you please elaborate on what defines male and female traits? What makes a male and what makes a female trait?
