CBS Reaches Subscribers Goal Two Years Early

My wife and I already have Hulu and Netflix along with Amazon Prime. I have serious interest in the new Star Wars series. I'm likely going to have to switch between Disney+ and CBSAA throughout the year.

I see it as closer than 40-60. But anyway, why assume that All Access, not Showtime, has the lesser number of subscribers?

They've been saying the numbers have been roughly even between Showtime and CBS All Access for a while now. I'm thinking that CBS is becoming a higher proportion just because while Showtime has some popular shows (Homeland), they haven't had anything really new and buzzworthy to draw in new subscribers.

Star Trek all year round will help though CBS will need to expand more from Trek for real long term success.

Twilight Zone will help. The Stand should also draw in some different viewers. Why Women Kill from Marc Cherry will help draw in more women.

- I'll take their forecast of 25 million subscribers in 3 years with a bit of salt - especially with Disney+ entering the market. I think there is a ceiling for CBS somewhere, if they do a lot of sports that can be very, very high though

- I think CBS has, so far, a good footing for the coming Streaming service war - if you compare the production values of a show like "Discovery" with the one from WB's "Titans" or "Doom Patrol" (the flagship shows of their respective nerd streaming services) - it's obvious CBS is putting a lot of money into it. They're smart, the company is big, they prepare for the future. Even if they have currently high overhead costs to built a functioning streaming service - CBS can afford that, and they will do that because they know this will be very, very important in the future.

coming Streaming service war

I don’t know that I’d call it a war. People will pay for what they want and won’t pay for what they don’t. I don’t know it will be so dramatic. You referenced Disney+ earlier. As I stated upthread, I will likely switch between the two services. While there’s a limited amount of money and there’s no reason people won’t switch based on what our interests are. That’s the wonder of the streaming model. The ratings matter so much less than broadcast. I just don’t know if I’ll care more about Picard or The Mandalorian if I’m forced to choose at that moment. Doesn’t mean I won’t watch both. I imagine a lot of others feel that way. And I’d also think that the people who head up these services know the pot is limited and they may have to be more patient with the “ratings” as the number of services grow.

But that might just be me.

Discovery sucks. Lazy writing. SJW's. Beards. Canon violations. Square nacelles. Klingon heads. Gene's Vision. Orville.

Bound to fail.

Probably won't even drop next week.

Worst show ever made.
What does this have to do with what anyone was saying in the thread? You're being overly defensive about the show again and fishing for a response. Stop it.

I thought it was a good parody of the Discovery detractors. In the grading thread of "Saints of Imperfections" some dude posted a review and called it the worst Star Trek episode ever, LOL. Maybe this wasn't the right thread for this, but it was a good parody of these fans.

Star Trek sucks.Low budget Forbidden Planet ripoff. Communist sympathizers. Clean shaven. No canon to speak of. Ship not a rocket or a pure saucer. Klingons just humans with beards and funny uniforms. Gene L. Coons' vision. Lost in Space.

Won't make it past 79 episodes.

Wouldn't even work as an animated show or film, let alone live action spin-offs.

Worst basis for a franchise ever.

Knock it off.

Yes, it's something V'Ger frequently does in new threads praising Discovery or CBS:AA and has been asked to stop many times before. He anticipates what he thinks the "haters" will say and posts a hyperbolic version of it in advance. It's not helpful, especially in a thread that had already been running for two days and two pages without any posts resembling that. There are enough real complaints without looking for or trying to provoke ones that don't even exist yet.

And I was hoping to just let it slide with the one comment and not make a whole thing out of it, but then the peanut gallery decided to get in on the act (not including you in that, Cyrus, since yours was a genuine attempt at explanation). People shouldn't assume that they know the whole picture from one post. This is something we've talked to V'Ger about numerous times.

No. The Deadline article didn't say that the boss said it was 50-50 split. It said he said it was roughly a 50-50 split. The operative word is roughly, and that's a big enough loophole for it to be, oh, 40-60, for instance. That would round down to 3 million CBSAA subscribers from 3.2M.

The fact that the word "roughly" was used does in fact demonstrably suggest that the split isn't in fact 50-50. The Deadline article even drew attention to this fact by pointing out that only a combined number was reported.
To me, the word "roughly" translates to possibly a 40-60 split with DSC leading the way. I'm choosing to spin it positively for CBSAA. After all AA has the shows that have the most buzz among fans. Of course it's your prerogative if you want to spin the statement negatively toward CBSAA. But I saw no credible evidence in the article that suggests CBSAA has the lesser number.

Perhaps the reason the numbers weren't broken out (other than that CBS never does this), is because the article was about CBS' "streaming services" in general. Sounds like the acting CEO is trying to, among other things, assure everyone that the transition from Moonves' regime to the new regime has not hurt CBS' march into the future with the new medium.

The CEO is taking a big picture view here so no reason to break out exact numbers between services. What CBS wants to focus on is how well their streaming strategy is going overall.
