Everything we know about USS Discovery's interior

Well, I do wish they went with helm/nav instead of conn/ops, but that's a minor quibble in an excellent series.

I'd rather have helm and nav as well. It makes more sense that they'd be facing the windshield since their driving. And I'd have Ops a station along the perimeter of the bridge.

Ok, so it looks like some people are able to see images and some not. I really don't know what to tell ya. I'll see what I can do about a 3rd party image hosting site. I really don't understand why this site has such an issue with pictures

Again, that was made very quickly on my phone using rough cut out pieces of the set plan. But it's just for a rough idea, slightly more refined from my original hand drawn sketch.

Thanks, I can see it now. But you can also embed them using imgur.com so the viewer can see them in the thread. It takes a little time to get used to using it.

I would love to see you flesh out more details, including creating a use for those sets of side windows, putting in bathrooms, and creating a connection to the new ready room. For example, the new ready room has three windows and the area we have identified as it's probable location (above and behind the bridge) has five windows in the opening credit sketches. I wonder if that interior door next to the conference room could be the Captain's private quarters, with the other two windows.

I can certainly do that when I get the time :D Working on a rough layout of the ready room and possible private quarters idea you have as we speak.

@Styleset I'm noticing the 5 windows on the rear of the bridge are very tightly packed together. The 3 on the ready room interior are pretty spaced apart. It would work a lot better if it was changed in two possible ways. Either add the two extra windows in between the 3 windows on the interior, OR, Remove 2 of the windows on the exterior so that only the central and outer 2 remain. Hopefully that makes sense. If one of those options were done, the interior and exterior would match almost flawlessly. If we assume with your idea, that the actual ready room takes up 3 of the windows, leaving the other 2 as part of a new room, this causes both rooms to be squished down into impossibly small spaces, much smaller than we see in the show. Hopefully all that description makes sense haha!

Ops would be a very useful position on a starship. The captain and first officer are responsible for the overall operations of the ship. But they'd need to delegate the day-to-day allocation of resources to a dedicated officer, such things as sensor array time to various departments.

And the captain would need someone to coordinate resource allocation in a crisis, like Owosekun did. The captain can order the re-allocation but he needs someone to execute that order. That's Ops.

But that's just my impromptu woolgathering. YMMV.

I still don't see it. That's what the department heads are for. The Science Officer's job is to decide which scientists get how much sensor time, or to override the computer's multitasking decisions. The Engineer sends damage control to where the damage is. There doesn't need to be a middle manager between the XO, deciding how the crew functions on a high level, and the department heads. The only way Ops even begins to make sense is if the ship is sitting on a bunch of miscellaneous, unallocated crew and resource capacity, which I guess makes sense for a virtual city in space like the Enterprise-D, but like Lorca said way back when, there are no free rides in the 23rd century. Everybody and everything should have a specific-enough job to do that you don't need a dedicated referee to decide whether Scotty gets more extras for repairs or Spock gets more extras to figure out a way to escape the Big Space Whatever, and if one needs to steal from the other, that's why you have an XO. Luckliy Spock, being a morally superior Vulcan, won't just abuse his dual-position to win every turf war for resources. I'm not sure how the interpersonal or hierarchical issues shake out on, say, Voyager, where the Ops officer is an ensign, so everyone Harry overrules outranks him.

Indeed. Again, it feels like getting lost in the weeds.

At this rate, they're probably going to have all of Starfleet's starcharts corrupted by an Iconian computer virus, so just in time for 2265, a front-of-house navigation station becomes a requirement and Ops gets moved to the cellar. As frustrating as retconning the TOS time-period was, clumsily re-retconning it back is irritating me even more.

Sorry to hear that...

The term conn was used in TOS. Though it seemed to refer to taking command of the bridge/ship, not navigation.

I.E.: "Scotty, you have the conn."

It might also be a reference to a submarines, the conning tower.

Interestingly, Memory-Alpha doesn't have a page dedicated to the term, conn just gives you the TNG era station.

TrekCore pointed this out on twitter, the door frame in Pike's readyroom

They have some observations for Tilly's quarters as well

Okay, so now we know:

The intersection line between the two realms tells quite graphically where the spore flying aquarium booth thingamabob (aka "Reaction Cube") is located. So we have established the whereabouts of the engineering set we see, which is consistent with the "Context is for Kings" zoom-out and the oft-recycled graphic where an area is asymmetrically highlighted in yellow. The Reaction Cube sits more or less in the middle of the diamond of grey highlights close to the portside bow of the secondary hull...

Which is sort of weird because when the ship starts sinking deeper in the acid trip of the spore realm, the intersection remains in place within the Reaction Cube. A coincidence, or careful control by Airiam? If the latter, why's she trying to give herself and everybody else on the bridge an acid bath?

Perhaps the smaller, flatter surface e of the Primary Hull slips more easily in?
Or could it be that the mass of the Secondary is so much greater that it doesn't slid in as easy?

Or maybe the reaction cube is the pivot point and as the ship finally sunk all the way it would have gone nose first?
