We might see Sulu on Discovery this season.

I mean I have no evidence of this and maybe we only will have it confirmed he is on the ship but I think the season opener might have hinted he is already on the ship. I am currently watching the seasoner opener again on Youtube and Stamets mentions a Botanist on aboard who he confirms the specs of the Enterprise when the bridge crew is crying to figure out what happened to the ship. I might be wrong but in Trek's second pilot episode when we first see Sulu he is not a pilot but someone who reports to the bridge I think as a Life scientist I think it was. Plus we later see him working with the plants including those rare plants that can move like they have a human hand inside them controlling them.

You're wrong here. In "Where No Man Has Gone Before," Sulu was "astro-sciences." "Life sciences" was Dr. Piper, naturally.

In the briefing room, Sulu gave a mathematical analysis of the problem of coping with Gary, as that of geometric growth.

That's a good point, though. That was from "The Man Trap."

It's possible that Stamets' buddy is Sulu. :shrug:
 
What is an "ethnobotanist"?

Today, somebody in that field would study the use of plants in a culture (of the writings-and-temples sort, rather than as in horticulture). Sulu might have an interest in horticulture because he has an interest in the use of plants in culture. But that's just an interest - in the episode, Sulu is very much the helm officer and important bridge minion by job description.

Doesn't mean Stamets wouldn't refer to him by his hobby (or former profession?), the thing connecting the two, and ignore his actual position aboard the Enterprise.

They have to space the stunt casting out.

Season 3 you get McCoy.
Season 4, LT James Kirk.
Season 5, Sulu/Uhura/Scotty/Chekov because it takes four of them to equal one McCoy or Kirk.
 
While I wouldn't mind seeing Bones (favorite Trek character), I hope we don't see any more of the TOS regulars. Because of putting the family Sarek into the equation, of course, at some point bringing Spock into the picture was going to happen. It didn't need to but it was going to happen. We don't need Kirk and the rest. Hopefully, TPTB won't just rush to any more stunt guest roles.

If the show lasts 5 seasons, and (hypothetically) if the story jumps ahead a year or two extra above and beyond the IRL 5 years, then the events at the end of DSC might be happening only three years before TOS. Let's be a bit liberal with when Kirk took command of the Enterprise, and say in was 2264. That makes my hypothetical end of DSC only 2 years prior to him taking command of the Big E.

There are many "ifs" in my hypothetical scenario, and it still might be too soon for Kirk, but I do think it is plausible that he had command of some other ship prior to taking command of the Enterprise, and there might be a way to make him the Captain of the Disco in 2262-ish.

Having said that, the writers/showrunners doing it in a non-forced not "all too convenient" way might be difficult.

I agree. .To have Kirk take command after Pike also was in command for a year would be a real stretch. I could see Kirk show up the show though in some other fashion. I also still like the idea that Scotty being the chief engineer of Discovery. We know he was assigned to many other ships before he ever found his true love of being chief engineer of the Enterprise.

I realize we don't canonically know Sulu's age, but Takei was the youngest member of the TOS cast. Given we're still about ten years out from the start of TOS, it would make sense that Sulu is still at Starfleet Academy.

The two characters from TOS who are the right age to see - as they should already be somewhat established in their careers - are McCoy and Scott.

Don't worry about it. Alex Kurtzman already did it in the Star Trek 09 movie so he can do it here too.

I highly expect to see Kirk show up at the end of Season 2 (in name) as a teaser for season 3.

I doubt Sulu's "first job" on the USS Enterprise will count any more than cloaking devices being theoretical or Pike being sexist. Sulu's known as a pilot, and that's what he'll be.

And he'll be gay.
 
I say they hire George Takei and simply use some of that de-aging computer graphic stuff that is becoming all the rage and have him play a cadet version of himself if that is what age he is suppose to be. Maybe he is friends with Tilly and maybe even a old romance unless of course Prime Universe Sulu being gay is part of canon now like Kelvin Universe Sulu was. That is also assuming he wasn't bi in the Kelvin Universe. They basically can do whatever best fits the story and it all can be fit into canon just fine.
