Keeping track of supplies used, allocating what is needed to what department, checking in and out equipment, knowing what supplies they have when responding to emergency situations, loading/off-loading cargo, safety checks that all supplies are stored correctly, alerting the chain of command when supplies run low and providing an itemised list of what is needed at their next docking, probably also maintenance and operation of cargo transporters and anti-grav sleds, repairing any damaged gear or uniforms, monitoring stock of organic and non-organic replicator matter, and of course the obligatory looking busy by moving cargo containers from one place in the bay to another.

I bet this job description doesn't get brought up too often in the Starfleet recruitment sales pitch. "We aren't going to pay you, of course, and there is a better than 90% chance that you will be either disemboweled by a Klingon or assimilated by the Borg, but it's your duty to do your part for the embetterment of humanity to hand count our inventory of self-sealing stembolts."

A number of these ideas are "probably" already on the ship, just not highlighted or shown to much on tv or treklit.
You have a Xeno Archeologist, you have a supply officer, you have a contact specialists on board, just that most action takes place on the bridge.
Now, a different specialist that could be shown on TV and be interestiing ( Star Trek Supply Department!) Maybe something like a T'ryssa Chen, maybe devote an episode to a first contact, and have a guest star be the kind of lead, with the main stars in the back ground.

Considering that the producers of Enterprise reportedly took the time to tour a submarine to get an idea of how they wanted the interior of the NX-01 to look, it should have been incredibly easy to find out that a naval quartermaster has nothing to do with supply, but what do I know?

And I don't give a fiddler's damn if they've consistently used "quartermaster" incorrectly in Star Trek--it's still incorrect. Period. Starfleet isn't a gorram army. This is one time no amount of debate is going to change my mind.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take out my frustration on some tables.

That's a good idea. They'd have to be well versed in xeno-cultures.

And this is why the fleet is full of humans running the show, they only care about themselves, 'Terran privilege' at its finest.

In my world, "quartermaster" works helm, navigation, and stellar cartography.

If you want supplies, you go see the "storekeeper".

Marines. Enterprise NX-01 basically had them but they are needed everywhere else.

Or at the very least, hang a lampshade on them being there by calling for a Starfleet version of a sea and anchor detail.

Given the amount of temporal and spatial anomalies, god like beings and other such phenomena-I don't see why Starfleet, couldn't have say a Extraordinary Situations Officer, or someone trained and experienced in dealing with such situations.

Eh, it's a combined service, not everything got copied over unchanged. They use first officer, helmsman, navigator and adjutant "wrong," too. Kirk even called himself a "soldier," what!?

So like Stargate SG teams? Have a standard group of people that transport down? :)
