Most of the characters on the spinoffs tend to be "kitbashes" of the TOS characters. Though some are, I dunno, what is it called when you lop off a part of a model and pretend it's a new ship?

It's one of the reasons I really do like Tilly in DSC...she's a complete departure from the standard stock Starfleet characters that have been on each series.

Star Trek is great when it is "doom and gloom" (see: Wrath of Khan, Best of Both Worlds, Conspiracy, Dominion War arc, etc) and it's great when it's really lighthearted, silly fun (see: Trouble with Tribbles, several Q episodes, several DS9 Ferengi episodes, Voyage Home, etc).

It's also great when it's a courtroom drama (Measure of a Man, Court Martial, etc) a police procedural , hard sc-fi, romance, horror etc etc etc.

It's when it goes too long as one or the other that it gets dull and stale (VOY and ENT come to mind).

Way way late to the party, hi everyone! Just got thru S1. Yeah I see what the haters were complaining about. The characters need to become more likable and charismatic, and the show needs to depend less on big plot twists, some of which are pretty damn easy to figure out. I'm sure you guys had Tyler figured out from the first scene, right? Hahaha man Starfleet can be silly at times. Let's take this guy with the questionable explanation how he survived Klingon imprisonment, who "fights like a Klingon" but seems forgetful about his own backstory, and make him head of security!



I'm with ya on Tyler and L'Rell. They were the highlight of the season for me. Not really sold on Mirror Geogiou, but she's getting her own show, so maybe she's busy there.

Tyler could become one of the most interestingly frakked-up Star Trek characters in a long time. I'm a big Niner and miss the good old days when the recurring villains were the best part of the show, stealing scenes from the relatively vanilla Starfleet characters. Fingers crossed for Tyler becoming this show's Dukat or at least Weyoun.

I think Tyler became essential to Lorca's plot because Lorca inherently knew something wasn't quite right about the guy.
Lorca was quite adept at reading people, so he may have realized right from the get go that Tyler wasn't who he claimed to be and used that to further his own schemes.

Which is why describing "True Star Trek" is so difficult and make me laugh when I see that explained (would that be Treksplained? ). Star Trek is very much a variety platform, capable of doing drama and comedy very well.

Why the need to put Trek in a box is beyond me...

Still the grittiest, harshest show I've ever seen. If people think DSC S1 was too dark (or BSG for that matter), they should watch Oz. It makes Discovery look like nothing. It should be mandatory viewing for Scared Straight programs.

How does having a female chief engineer count as evidence of DSC being kitbashed?

Is it somehow impossible for a woman to be an Engineer unless she's been 'inspired by Torres'? There were female engineers on other shows, and they presumably wanted to be Chief Engineer someday, too.

There was a female chief engineer on TNG, but it turned out Wesley knew a lot more than she did and we didn’t see her again.

I mean if Spock had a sister in a book, that wouldn't automatically mean Michael was based on the book. 'Female' and 'Chief Engineer' is not a particularly specific or unlikely set of traits.
