I realize i'm pretty late to the party, having just watched this movie last night on Netflix. Was it a good movie? Absolutely. Was it a great movie? No, not really. I found the basic story to be quite predictable. Is this motion picture Oscar worthy? Not by a long shot. A fun and entertaining pop-corn flick, nothing more. All in all, I was entertained and liked the movie. B+

I agree with most of this except I wouldn't even call it a good movie. It was boring as hell. Looked great though. At least as far as the costumes and set designs were concerned. The CGI was terrible.

The film received seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It also got nods for Original Score, Orginal Song ("All the Stars"), Production Design, Sound Mixing, Costume Design, Film Editing, and Sound Editing.

Considering the other nominees, I'm not surprised it didn't get Special Effects, but I am surprised it didn't get Makeup and Hairstyle.

Considering the strong contenders in directing, acting, screenplay, and cinematography, I'm also not surprised it didn't get any of those. The best shot was Jordan for Supporting Actor and I'm fine with him not getting it here.

The Disney Studios really must have went out of its way to shell out the cash for those nominations. Best Picture nod? "Black Panther" is a good movie, but its rather conservative ending prevents me from regarding it as great and worthy of a Best Picture nomination.

Definitely deserves it. 97% critical consensus, 1.3Billion WW (including 700M dom). All the measurable marks of success were hit.

Why would there be salt from DC fans? Suicide Squad, The Dark Knight and Batman (1989) have been academy award winners for years. This will be Marvel's first Oscar win, if it happens.

Also for Disney, with the 7 for BP but also Mary Poppins getting 4 and Christopher Robin got 1 as well!

The biggest disappointment will be for First Man, which got a very decent 4 noms, but all in the technical categories. A best picture nom + 2 acting ones probably would have warranted a re-release. As such, the movie will forever remain a massive box office flop.

Oh, and how about a Netflix release getting a best picture nom? Pretty historic Oscars season.

'Black Panther nominated for best picture ? Ridiculous, it's not even the best Marvel movie and none of the others got that nomination. If there was an award for most culturally significant movie, well maybe....but there isnt.'

I thought it was a decent, main sequence MCU movie. Nothing more.

The critics and audience both disagreed and made Black Panther of bona-fide cultural phenomenon. I didn't like the movie either, but it's important to recognize when you are in the minority.

Ridiculous? Clearly not to the Academy.

Same as above. You not liking or even understanding the movie is not relevant. It's a pop culture phenomenon the likes of which no movie has been for quite a while.

I must agree. Black Panther was a good, B+ film, but it was not some revelation in the art of filmmaking, the superhero genre, or Marvel movies in general. Despite many an entertainment business mouthpiece being typically offensive by almost implying that this superhero movie is akin to some next phase of the Civil Rights Movement, the film made its comments, but as I observed in my review, its been spun by both the Left and Right to argue for or against agendas of their own making. Unfortunately, if the film won Best Picture, the doors of this ideologue war would be blown off for more ranting, which serves no purpose and advances no cause.

Other fantasy films that received Best Picture nominations actually made a major shift in the business and/or popular culture, such as Jaws (1975), the original Star Wars (1977) or altered the perception of how great a fantasy movie coulf be as in the case of Best Picture winner The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), but Black Panther is not that kind of film. No current superhero film earned that distinction.

I made the same arguments months ago, but as time goes by and the cultural appreciation for Black Panther refuses to vane, I realize that I must have misinterpreted the situation. Black Panther is the first superhero movie to have this kind of cultural impact. You don't have to agree with it, or understand it (I sure don't) but it's there. You don't get to tell people who felt that this movie spoke to them on a deeper level than any other superhero movie that came before it that their feelings are incorrect.

I'm not shocked it's been nominated since its been hyped up beyond belief. For me, it was not a good movie. The story was bland, the characters were dull, the CGI was below par. It's not the best Marvel movie of 2018 let alone of all time. The costumes and sets deserve their nominations but a best picture award is laughable. There's nothing outstanding about this movie apart from the hype.

And once again, you are ignoring the cultural impact that Black Panther had. It didn't affect you (or me) but it really got to millions and millions of people. The "hype" wasn't some marketing stunt - people just loved the movie. Domestically, it made more money than Infinity War (which also had T'Challa btw).

Misinterpreted ? Maybe, maybe not.

The movie itself doesn't need to speak to anyone on a deeper level. It's (imho obviously) not in the same league as a motion picture as say, Winter Soldier. It's cast, creative team and timing are, I would suggest, it's true usp. That's the driver for it's cultural impact, not the quality of the movie itself.

It's a good movie but it's been nominated for it's undeniable importance, not because it's a great movie.

That's not necessarily true. Suicide Squad won for...makeup, lol. TDK got some good ones.

But none of them were nominated for the biggest award of them all, Best Picture. BP is the first superhero film to make it there. Possibly the last.

You won't get another superhero film that will hit such a big cultural impact as this one, especially amidst a highly publicized backlash against in Oscars in previous years due to discrimination against African-Americans specifically.
