    Hi guys,
Looking at buying the Blu Ray Animated Series, but I heard there's audio synch issues.
Could someone shed some light on this issue and any others please?
    Many thanks.

I have some issues with my copy of The Invaders DVD set but so far have never received a reply from Paramount UK over the net! It's almost as if their mistakes are not worth answering!!!

While I appreciate the work put in by GeekFiler to compare BD vs DVD images in that thread, I have to say that my DVD set looks like his BD image. Nothing in my TAS DVDs is blurry like Spock's face in the posted comparison.

I'm getting a beautiful, sharp TAS picture on DVD using a plain (non-computer, non-gamer) Bluray player and a 32-inch, 720p flat screen TV.

I get an excellent picture on my portable TV set which came out in 2000 especially for the three TOS sets and TAS is quite nice too!

If you have the TOS-R Season 2 set you can test the audio for the Tribbles cartoon on that, since for that episode CBS just ported the entire episode over to the TAS CS Blu Ray. But as far as the audio issue, it seems to be a player software/hardware issue. As I mentioned in the previous thread, for me there is a slight delay going from my PS3 to my audio system by optical TOSLINK, whereas going by HDMI right to my TV, there doesn’t seem to be a delay.

Actually, the sound mix on the TOS-R season 2 version of More Tribbles, More Troubles is completed enhanced. Sound effects were added to make it "surround." Much like the entire original series was f'ked with. So that's not a good comparison.

He was asking about audio synch issues, not the mix. The Tribbles TAS episode on the TOS-R blu-Ray is the same as the one on the TAS Complete Blu-Ray, as CBS just ported the 2006 HD Remaster over from the TOS-R set.

I realize that, but he said the episode was "just ported over." Which I took to mean it was just simply moved over without change. Since the sound is actually what is in question, mentioning a change in the sound mix seemed worth pointing out since it's not the same version as on the Blu Ray set. Take the info as you will. :)

What change in the mix? As far as I’m aware both Blu-Ray mixes are the 5.1 mixes from the DVD with the only change being that instead of Dolby Digital 5.1, the Blu-Rays are in 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, with the mono tracks being 192kbs 2.0 Dolby Digital on all three formats.

Sound effects were added to the episode when it was included on the original series set. These were, thankfully, not included in the TOS-A set.

What sound effects? I think you need to get your ears checked! It's the same 5.1 mix from the DVD set and the TAS Blu-Ray! I've got the TOS Season 2 Blu-Ray on right now, and I just listened to the TAS Blu-Ray before, its the same mix. The only thing that wasn't ported over from the DVD was the English Mono track (although it does have the Mono Spanish and French tracks, also with the DS9 Tribbles episode, only the 5.1 and Spanishi/French 2.0 Surround mixes were ported over). The only difference between the DVD and Blu-Ray mixes is that on DVD the 5.1 tracks are encoded at 448 kbps Dolby Digital, which is lossy and highly compressed, where as the Blu-Rays use lossless DTS-HD 5.1 at 1.5Mbps, which gives more dynamic range for the sounds.

Now then, across all 3 sets, the Mono Tracks on the episode are encoded as Dolby Digital 2.0 192kbps, which is extremely lossy and really compresses the dynamic range (by analogy, DD 2.0 192kbps would be like the Linear Audio Track on a VHS or Betamax, acceptable, but not as good the Hi-Fi tracks in terms of Dynamic Range).

Surely the most important point here is that Paramount/CBS cannot make a product without a fault! Here we are today with people shouting the preferences of Blu over DVD and yet we end up with a fault here or there from a technology that should be perfected at this stage! At least the majority of DVDs have no faults today (The UK version of The Invaders not mentioned) :brickwall:

    Nope. Not even a little.

Perhaps you need to turn up your sound a bit. On the TOS Blu Ray, the MOMENT you see the Enterprise in More, Tribbles there is an engine rumble. There never was in the animated series. The two cargo ships also have a rumble. There are also more sounds on the bridge, sort of like the transporter room background sound laid over. The Klingon torpedoes have the TOS tv series sound on the special features version but the TOS-A blu ray version has the higher pitched animated series version. I am A-B'ing both versions right now. The sound on the TOS Tribbles speacial features has a much fuller 5.1 surround sound mix. The Animated Series BD sound is flatter and centralized - as it should be. I'm not going any further into the episode because I already confirmed my findings.

So, please, check again. Unless you have a magical re-release with the sound mixes fixed (and man, pass it my way if you do), then you're simply mistaken or maybe we're just getting our signals crossed in the discussion.

Trust me, I am a maniac about the sound mixes, I had the episodes on audio tape for a decade and then the VHS tapes for years after that. The Animated Series Blu-Rays and DVDs sound fine. The special features version of the episode was altered substantially.

Maybe it’s your sound system. There’s a reason Brian Wilson preferred mixing the Beach Boys songs in mono—-he could control the levels so that people heard what he wanted them to hear. Since for me, aside from the DVD having a compressed dynamic range due to the Dolby Digital encoding, the three mixes are the same.

It's not my sound system. The sound mixes are different. If I had the ability to post the videos here, I would. How would the same sound system play two discs and ADD sound effects to an episode on one disc and not another? There are more sound effects on the More Tribbles episode on the season 2 blu ray Trouble with Tribbles bonus features than on the DVDs and the Blu Ray edition of the animated series. They remixed the sound for the bonus features. Plain the simple. For whatever reason, you're not hearing them.

You don't know who you're talking to. Ssosmcin is a fan-expert in this, a go-to guy in the areas of TOS sound mixes and music scores.

Yes, I doubt that I could tell the difference myself if I had Blu, unless it is a scene very close to my heart, then I'd know instantly I'm sure! But not on this one...

You probably couldn't going by memory, but if you compare them, it's pretty obvious. :)
