I said that it fails as a prequel to TOS, not that it isn't advertised as one.

Would work even better, since everyone knows about the MU, they've already helped the Terrans overthrow their Klingon/Cardassian oppressors, and now the Terrans want to go back to being evil overlords themselves.
Half of those John Eaves ship designs would work just fine post-NEM.
