There's nothing that has indicated that this is a direct sequel, which is what had blocked Sony from making a straight GB3 (plus, you know, Aykroyd and Reitman being fucking ghoulish about saying "we're shooting GB3 in a few months and it's got the old crew" when Ramis couldn't fucking walk for the last few years of his life). Young kids who dig up the old shit, basically doing the Stranger Things gag, is about all Sony is allowed to about to do.

Edit: And the GB2 contracts say that the only way a direct sequel happens is if the four principals (Reitman, Ramis, Aykroyd, Murray) agree, obviously Ramis is out of the way, but Murray ... I don't see that happening. I'll buy premium accounts for three people if that (as in a real GB3) happens.

Murray had a miserable experience on GB2--not unfairly, as it was being re-written on set and they did extensive re-shoots about two months before the movie came out--and that was why he has steadfastly refused to do another movie. He and Ramis reconciled a few weeks before Ramis' death after Brian Doyle-Murray basically said he'd break his brother's arm if Bill didn't do it. But that said, Venkman in GB1 has always been one of Murray's favorite roles and he's very protective of it.

Edit: And the Murray / Ramis feud happened during the shooting of Groundhog Day. Basically, that the movie turned out as well as it did is a combination of a happy accident and a minor miracle.

Murray was drinking and drugging harder than ever and going through an incredibly messy divorce, and as a result he was constantly getting into very public fights with Ramis on the set, with the arguments often getting very cruel and personal; Ramis is quoted in an interview as saying, "Bill, you're not a child, you don't need to throw a tantrum, just tell me what you want." Murray was often sending script rewrites to Ramis' co-writer, Danny Rubin, who would sometimes call Ramis at three in the morning and say, "You'll never guess what Bill sent over now..."

Murray and Ramis also had very different opinions about the tone of the movie. Murray would make noise about wanting it to be more of an existentialist drama, and Ramis would say to him, "Come the fuck on, Bill, it's a comedy."

When Ramis called cut on Murray's final scene, Murray walked up to him and said, "I have nothing more to say to you," and walked off set. They didn't speak again, outside of exchanging brief pleasantries at a wake, until a few weeks before Ramis' death, only because Brian Doyle-Murray strong-armed Bill into it upon learning how sick Ramis was.

Pretty much, Murray -talented as he is- is a giant prima donna asshole.

You like to say this--I swear to God you've been using the "prima donna" language for like a decade, going back to the build-up to The Video Game's release--but he is also a very deeply troubled person, as generally all addicts are. His behavior on the set of Groundhog Day was, indeed, bullshit. Him refusing to allow a GB3 after how unhappy he was with GB2, however, does not make him an asshole.

I had an idea that they could say Egon finally drilled a hole in head and that's why he died

That brings up a good point, have they actually said anywhere that we will see the any of the original Ghostbusters, or just that it takes place in the same world as the original movies. I had been assuming it was going to have at least some of them, but thinking back to the articles I've read, I honestly can't remember if they ever specifically said we'd see them.
I read on IGN earlier today that the main characters are going to be a 13 year old boy and 12 year old girl. I'm starting to wonder now if we won't actually see any of the original cast, and we'll just get references back to what happened in New York, and we'll just see pieces of the original tech and things like that.
The references to them being in a small town makes me wonder if the Ecto One being in a barn is a part of the movie. Maybe the kids stumble across it somehow and that's where we start getting our connections to the original movies.

I swear to God, I should put this on a keyboard macro or some shit.

    - Columbia wanted, as far back as in 1986, which was making money hand over fist from toys (it buried GI Joe, and then got totally buried by TMNT), to get a Ghostbusters 2 in production.
    - In a New York Times interview, Ivan Reitman said "that's news to me" when the interviewer said that that he had been told that the studio head wanted out in 1988 or 1989
    - Reitman quickly realized Columbia wanted to franchise the shit out of Ghostbusters, as did Ramis and Aykroyd
    - Ramis and Reitman didn't want anything to do with it, but saw money to be made, as did Murray
    - They all steadfastly came together and had super-agent Michael Ovitz write their contracts to say that no actual Ghostbusters 3 be made unless all the principals agreed upon the script.
    - Ernie Hudson continued to get screwed
    - GB2 went massively over-budget because of effects work (largely due to starting production in late 1988; ILM rushed and had to off-load a bunch of shots to studios like Apogee and Boss), and Murray got incredibly cranky about the whole thing being a VFX-driven thing I'm digging this up in case someone says that The Video Game was really GB3: The Fan-Film Game, even though it was marketed as a game written by Ramis and Aykroyd. when there were guys like Durre and Melchior rewriting the damn maniac who wanted their script read.

Bullshit, it did. Even with the announced mixed race/sex younger characters, this is just a sop to the asshole Ghostbros who acted like a bunch of whiny babies needing their diapers changed simply because Columbia made a decision to reboot the franchise with women instead of their beloved, aging senior citizen boys.

EDIT: I might see this next year, but I'm not making promises.

Well Sony wants to make money, so it wouldn't make much sense to emulate the previous film what with it's very poor box office and all. There's only three ways to make a Ghostbusters team. All men, all women, or mixed. They've done the first two, time for the third.

I am for the mixed teams, I don't care for races, sex or collor. Just find the right actors and a good story

If nothing else, the proton pack sound effect sounded really good in the teaser.

No, it's at least in part ploy for actual monetary returns after the financial dud of the Feig reboot. But even if it were "just [such] a sop", that wouldn't invalidate my observation. Reasonable people can disagree over whether the Feig movie was funny. But its lack of spooky atmosphere or genuine interest in paranormal storytelling isn't a matter of interpretation on my part, nor a swing and a miss on Feig's; it was a deliberate choice on the filmmakers' part to ignore all that in favor of improv comedy and frames so bright and colorful the youngest child in the audience wouldn't feel so much of a twinge of anxiety across the entire flick.

I heard the teenager apart but I head their was going to be teams and not just one team involved. Also kids. So I am thinking a Ghostbusters Academy type of situation. The old actors naturally being perfect as teachers or instructers. Maybe it's kind of inspired by "Harry Potter."

Ah, yes. The "whiny man-baby" excuse. Newsflash -- gender-swapping characters usually pisses people off, because it's not needed. And if they were female characters switched to men, you know Twitter (and people like you, I expect) would lose their shit.

And audiences are allowed to reject a movie....which is what happened to Ghostbusters 2016. And Oceans 8. People say "nope" and studios take the hit. Movies exist to make money, and if you don't put butts in seats, suck it up. Except in this current media age, attacking the fandom for all sorts of reasons seems to be the thing to do. "You whiny men!"

For what it's worth, the only one whining right now is Leslie Jones, acting like a moron on Twitter. She still has a career...whiny man-babies didn't take it away from her. People just didn't like the Ghostbusters movie she starred in.

As for GB3, it should've happened 10 years ago. I don't have high hopes for this film myself.

Welcome to the internet. People do that every day. No, it's not good....but it's the INTERNET. If she doesn't know this by now that people online are dumb, why is she on Twitter? Hell, I've gotten death threats online for correcting Japanese nationalists' skewed views of WW2.

But what I am specifically referring to is her meltdown today over the GB3 announcement.

    Well, her movie flopped.

So she is wrong. Franchise failures get rebooted all the time.

Sony would be wise to avoid using GB as a vehicle for gender politics this time around. I think they've learned.

Does she truly expect Sony to pony up the dough for another go around? I have zero beef with Jones (she's actually one of the things about GB16 I liked) but it's idiotic to take it personally. Your movie flopped. Ya dun.

The irony of course, is that if they hadn't made GB16 a complete do-over, they could have made GB3 a crossover/combo flick. (Not that they should/would have, but they could have.)

Unrelated, I really hope we don't see the effects jumping outside the film borders again like they did in GB3. Like, ever. I hated that very much.

She took it personally because how she was treated as a result of doing that film was very personal. Now Sony says "don't worry! We're bringing back the real guys!" and completely ignoring the 2016 film. She has every right to take it personally.
