News DSC Season 2 Premiere Reviews

The Dominion used protomatter as part of a small bomb they were going to use to blow up the Bajoran sun (to take out Bajor, Deep Space Nine, and whatever parts of the combined Federation, Klingon, and Romulan fleets stayed in the blast area (assuming for a moment that the blast wave will travel via subspace at FTL speeds like the blast wave from Praxis).
Heh...
Just think of what could have been if Praxis had been destroyed by a Protomatter bomb.
Might have just been compared to the Blackmailing of the Klingon Empire by L'Rell.

What if L’Rell moves the bomb to Praxis :shifty:

It doesn’r say much other than the first ep seems lighter and more fun than last season, to the reviewer’s approval.

Can't access that one unless one turns off adblock or pays.
I don't trust the site enough to do either.
It’s the website for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a reputable newspaper.

The bottom line in the article was “so far so good” and yhat it was more light-hearted than the first season, but wondered if the good first episode would carry to the rest of this season. He liked Mount’s less aloof Pike (less aloof compared to Lorca) and mentioned Tig Notaro’s new character.

He mentioned Notaro was a comedian, probably again alluding to the lightness of the ep.

My two favorite bits from the review:

"As a viewer, I didn’t realize how much anxiety was pervading Discovery until I experienced the show without it."

and

"In all respects, 'Brother' is a well-written and tightly-scripted show, already feeling more cohesive than some of Season One’s outings."

That sounds really promising.

By the way, Tuskin, thanks for posting your links and news threads.

"But in the season-two premiere, much of the latter takes a backseat to the kind of pew-pew-pew space warfare that often made Abrams’s Star Trek prequels play either like dry runs for Star Wars (a property that he eventually took over) or Tom Clancy–style military conspiracy thrillers, gussied up with warp drives and phasers. They’ve added a strained veneer of hip, deadpan goofiness that feels more CW teen drama than Trek... What’s onscreen in season two feels more consistent, smooth even, but also more distressingly typical. Do we really need another one-damned-thing-after-another space adventure, with the earnestness and emphasis on clashing personalities dialed back, and soon-to-be-dated social-media-humor stylings ladled over everything? There’s a warm yet self-satisfied 'You’re welcome' from one of the characters (of the type that one might affix to the top of a tweet containing a picture of a tiny kitten), and during an action sequence when the empath Saru’s feelers come out, he sees another crew member staring at him and almost shouts, 'Really? Are you surprised?'

...I don’t want to slam the door on this series on the basis of a between-seasons aesthetic pivot, especially after griping about how Trek fans have a decades-long history of rebelling against changes in formula, even small ones, then coming around and embracing those very same changes... But I can say — speaking for no one but myself — that this particular revamp is not something I want, or that strikes me as terribly special. I like the solemn cornball intensity of season one, and the long-form manipulation of story elements that sometimes made Discovery feel more like an early classic of TV anime...

I loved what this series was, warts and all, and I sincerely hope it gets back to some version of that sooner rather than later. I know full well that a lot of people out there aren’t going to miss the original incarnation of Discovery. But at the same time, I’m sure that turning it into the Trek version of Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t the solution."

>So it's like Abrams meets the CW on Twitter with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Didn’t Saru do a “You’re welcome” in season one? Maybe it’s meant to be a running gag.
