Which is silly, as they’re completely different players with different skill sets.

They both have next-generation-level skills for their positions. The biggest ding you can make on Machado is that he's a much worse shortstop than he is a third-baseman, whereas you can put Harper in essentially any outfield position---I'll admit I'd be a bit queasy if he were in center--and he can play first and third. Baseball isn't going to see free agents like this until Trout's contract expires.

And we're about a month away from pitchers and catchers reporting. Anyone want to dogpile on me again and say I was paranoid about the cold stove being a result of collusion? Edit: I'll remind y'all that you were saying a year ago that the cold stove was because teams were saving money last year for the Harper / Machado sweepstakes.

I swear to God, if the Yankees somehow land Manny while the Cubs--who have no real payroll ceiling--continue to trot out noted piece of shit Addison Russell, I am going to step out to my apartment balcony and unleash a shriek so unholy my next-door neighbor will be all, "Dude, WTF?"

If Machado signs with the Yankees, I will have my friend's daughter, who lives in the building next to mine, capture my unholy shriek. It will put King Ghidorah--the One True King not named Ser Barrold of House Bounds--to shame.

I don’t question either player’s talent or potential, but I don’t necessarily buy the argument that teams can find a place to play one of them for exactly the reasons you cited. The Yankees need a shortstop with Gregorius out until July or August, but is Machado the answer if he’s going to play next to Andujar (who’s a great hitter but a terrible defensive third baseman)? Harper makes sense, as the Yankees need a left-handed bat, but first base would be only place for him unless Stanton or Hicks is moved.

The MLB Players’ Union royally fucked everyone in the last CBA, as the players have no leverage. Meanwhile, the GMs have gotten smarter with respect to offering players long-term contracts. Nobody wants to get stuck paying Giancarlo Stanton when he’s thirty-eight.

Dozier signs for 1/8, Grandal for 1/18.25.

The qualifying offer fucked both of those guys hard.

If the union doesn't strike in 2021, then I hope Marvin Miller's ghost haunts Tony Clark for the rest of his natural life.

I thought Dozier wasn't eligible for a QO since he was traded during the year?

Depends what he does this year. Though I don't consider $18.3 million getting fucked.

It's the length, or rather the lack thereof, which is egregious. Grandal is only 30 and has a career OPS+ of 115; there is no reason he should have been given a one-year deal. I mean, hell, like four years ago Russell Martin signed for like 5 / 80.

Then laid the proverbial egg. GM's are simply more leery of attaching themselves long-term to players now. Especially aging players, and catcher is a position that probably wears the worst physically on a player.

A third of the league isn't competing at all now, a third are competing with limited resources and a third can buy who they want.

Tough times when you agree to a salary cap but don't get a salary floor with it.

Balls. As I said earlier, MLB's revenues last year were the highest they've ever been ($10.3 billion), yet the players' share of that pie is at a nearly record-low, a percentage not seen since the '70s. Given things like revenue sharing and the television deals, any team pleading poverty is lying through their teeth.

If all revenue sources were shared equally, I would agree with your assessment.

Always sad to see a fellow Mel leave this mortal coil, even if he was a Yankee. :(

The White Sox are leading the Machado sweepstakes with an 8 / 250 offer, while the Phillies appear to be the front-runners for Harper.

These are generational talents, people. Fucking pay someone.

Kyler Murray is entering the NFL draft, and various writers are using that fact as a way of bemoaning the fact that baseball isn't "America's sport" or what have you.
Here's what they should be bemoaning - a young man is RISKING HIS FUTURE PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE HEALTH simply because he can make god-like amounts of money for his family.
Why can he make god-like amounts of money for his family? Because a massive industry has monetized the violent clashes of a couple thousand (mostly minority) young men, and promoted this "sport" as an ideal way to show your talents and abilities.
That's a travesty. Baseball isn't perfect, but at least it doesn't FEATURE violence. There's a path for folks to play and spend their entire retirement feeling their brain slowly turn into mush.....

I'd say $31+ million annually is paying someone.
