Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

First day back at work and I'm happy and grateful to be alive... I was really, really sick for about 9 days following the holiday.
Had to rush my mom to the ER on Christmas night with the same affliction (it hit me 2 days later). Haven't been that sick ever, except maybe once when I was a really little kid. Ugh.
I'm glad you're feeling better. Is your mom doing better?
I think that my sister brought me a cold for the holidays. I'm doing a little better now but it seems to be taking forever to go away.

Really happy to hear you're better!

Ugh! Take care of yourself.

Thanks Gary. My mother is okay. Not going to lie: there was a moment when I was looking at her lying on the kitchen floor in a fetal position at 4 in the morning when I thought "This may be the last time I see my mom alive...". She's 79 after all. Thank goodness all ended well.
There's a nasty cold going around at my job right now and several peeps are walking around here like the living dead. I hope yours abates soon and that you're not suffering too much.

Really happy to hear you're better!

Thanks Scrib! :techman:

I’m awaiting February with trepidation. That’s the month when the most people get sick, at least in Sweden. Since I work as a teacher I’m bound to catch something from the kids.

Happy accidents:

I was testing out a new version of a plugin that I've had for years and didn't know there was a new version, so I created a box and did some modifying and then tested Octane Render again after using Vray for a while and created and applied a couple of materials to the box and came up with the image I'm using as my avatar at the moment.

The sides of that box look a little lonely, so I decided to add a couple of other logo designs of mine (one that I came up with in the 90s when I was working as an overnight cashier at a 24-hour gas station) and voilà, I came up with my blanket company's logo. More when finished with my further modifications.

I've just noticed the fine print on an SUV TV ad tonight.

There's been a trend here in Minnesota that I've noticed. When I'm traveling down the freeways on snowy or icy days, just about every vehicle I've seen in the ditches have been SUVs. While I'm a speed demon in fair weather, I'm pretty cautious in inclement conditions. Almost every vehicle that passes me is a big SUV and they're generally traveling at least 10mph faster than me, often far faster.

Well, according to this Lexus SUV commercial, the traction control feature is disabled after 43mph. 4WD alone will do exactly squat for you on icy roads, especially at 60+mph. People have ultimate confidence in their giant 4WD vehicles that they think they're safer than other vehicles at those speeds. If it's true of all SUVs, no wonder I see so many of those damned things facing the wrong way or on their sides in the snowbanks along the roads!

nothing beats good winter tires and - if necessary - snow chains.
I made my driving license on ice and snow, 35 years ago when we still had real winters. I never regretted that choice. And fool can drive on a dry and clean road but learning to drive on black ice and in 8 inches of snow prepares you for really everything. Btw, did you know that most cars behave on gravel /macadam/grit exactly like on ice? Whenever I get a new business car, I try its reactions on fine gravel and then know whether it'll try to break out clockwise or counterclockwise on ice. Saves me that split second of reaction time in an emergency that can be vital.

Chains have been illegal here for decades. It was really odd for me to drive through the Rockies and see signs that said that chains were mandatory in winter months.

Oh, and almost every driver in Minnesota forgets how to drive in winter at the beginning of each first snowfall.

My dog is deathly ill with a bleeding stomach ulcer.
(I think she is something like a CPA on the side)
So anyway I might have to put her down.
I've already spent about 6-7 thousand dollars on her for this illness.
And it just came in suddenly, she was fine about one week ago.

Trek sort of keeps my mind off of feeling sad.
Okay. I'm done, back you your regularly scheduled thread.

:wah:

My puppy fell ill suddenly in 2012, too and I knew if I didn't take her to the vet to put her down she would have suffered severely for a few more hours and would not have made it through the night.

The cat I lost last year, Jim...had I had access to the money I would have spent it on his surgery in a heartbeat, so I totally understand you spending what you could on her.

Unfortunately for me, I decided to give him up to my vet who said that she might be able to find a caretaker to accept him and pay for his surgery so he could live a full life (he was 5) even if it wasn't with me. After a few days of being inconsolable, I went back to my vet to ask to take him home again because I was his entire life and he had a horrible life before me. I don't know what actually happened to him, but he had signs of physical scars in his black fur and he had serious psychological issues. Even if he was destined to die in my care, at least he would have me to the end and know that I loved him. When I got to my vet, she said she couldn't find anyone and he passed earlier that day.

He died thinking that I abandoned him after giving him so much hope. :(

Today during my daily run, someone passed me a little too fast for my taste, so I sped up to first keep up with him and then sped up some more to pass him too. We sort of started a race that lasted for (almost) my entire usual run, until about one kilometer from (my) finish line when he (sort of) decided to let me go ahead... It was very exhilarating. It pays to be in good shape! That guy was a couple of decades younger than me, yet I still won the endurance contest!
