Can't speak for the poster above, but there needs to be a 'breath' post-TLJ. At the end, the Resistance was reduced to the handful of survivors the hold of the Falcon could transport away. Now if you were writing a series of books, that would be a fertile ground to pick up from. For a series of 'action' movies, maybe not so much. The farther you get from the end of the train wreck that was the last movie, the more options you have going forward. Just sayin'. There will be as many opinions on this as there are posters- and that's okay. It's half the fun, these days, since the movies themselves aren't all that.
Yeah, I really hope it's a little more substantial of a time jump than just a year. For one thing (assuming the First Order conflict gets resolved at all) this would be the shortest galactic conquest and insurgency in history given the first two movies take place over the course of a few weeks, tops.
For another, as of right now it's been *four and a half years* since TFA started principle photography. Daisy Ridley's workout routine for TLJ has already made it look like Rey may have a steroid abuse problem by how suddenly she acquired muscle mass on the island, so I would hope the next film gives some extra time to allow for how the younger cast especially, has aged in the interim.

Somebody asked Bob Iger if they would start releasing future Star Wars movies on Disney+ instead of in theaters, and the answer was a pretty obvious no. There is no way they are going to give up the money that the theatrical runs of the Star Wars movies bring.
Theater released Star Wars movies are like printing money for Disney.
And they got a huge investment in it given what they paid Lucas for it, plus money into the films, cartoons, merch (which seem to be their only misstep as they make too much of it), and Star Wars Land at their parks. I mean seriously....Disney's going all in on this.

Merch will be interesting in the next two years as Hasbro's license is up in 2020. So I wonder how that will go.
The title for Episode VIII was announced on 23rd of January 2017, and the first teaser didn't premiere until the 17th of April. Doesn't necessarily mean anything.
