Yeah, I definitely appreciated about the episode that they just saved a prewarp civilization on the brink of annihilation without thinking.

One of the biggest mistakes in TNG was to interpret the prime directive that way, that doing so was wrong because you might interfere in the 'Great plan of the universe' and one of those people might grow up to be the next Hitler.

The very idea that any other planet could compete with Earth at coming up with 'Next Hitlers'.

I had to skip the argument, whew what a lot scrolling... but anyway, if they aren't careful, Dann could be the breakout character.

Respectfully, not this viewer. "Our Heroes save a species before it's wiped out", is a Trek staple that we've all seen before. "Featured character deals with porn addiction that threatens to destroy his marriage"...I mean...we had the Barclay episode a long time ago, but I think that's the closest Trek ever came to this.

I don't believe seeking out strange new worlds has to be taken literally.

Oh, this show has a plethora of potential "breakout characters." Which is nice.

    That was my mistake.

He is in the second episode, but this was the holdover from last year. So now the "second" episode of the season is actually the "third".

    He'll be on next week.

Thanks. I was trying real hard to see him as a Moclan.

Am I the only one a little disappointed by how some of the technobabble is presented? I'm not saying it's bad, really. Heck, Trek's had some that's easily worse. It's just... there... & I feel it's more like Lamarr & some of the cast just don't negotiate it very believably. Honestly, I don't think Levar Burton & Brent Spiner get nearly enough credit for how comfortable they made some of that lunacy play. It's only when I see other actors delivering it, do I realize that

tbh most of these first two episodes have been pretty underwhelming IMO. especially since last season got so great after finding its stride around episode 3 or 4. hoping everything else is good. the s2e2 B-plot was the only interesting thing to me. the soap opera stuff just doesn't do it for me at all. oh well.

These 1000x for me. Worf's foster brother sneaking a group of aliens onto the holodeck before their world became uninhabitable and the Federation was going to just let them die because of the Prime Directive.

I think this is my second favorite now behind If The Stars Should Appear. That one was pure Star Trek-ish wonder, Primal Urges was equal parts serious, sad and hilarious, all in the right amounts.

Glad to know that wasn't actually Bortus tongueing down Isaac.

The Moclan "ways" are reminding me more of Klingons though. "Divorce before dishonor".

And I thought Moclans are kinder, gentler version of the Klingons :lol:. Curious what kind of Moclan 'death rituals' we'd see next ;).

How can it be interesting? You've seen it over and over and you know how it ends.

Yeah, you want to see a starship come to the aid of a planetary population being threatened, that plot's a dime a dozen on Star Trek. You want an officer going through marital problems that cause him to escape into porn fantasies until his spouse tries to murder him, than Orville's your show.

This show is doing what Star Trek should be doing, it's character drama with the "event stuff" like planetary destruction or what not just something what happens that the characters react to. It's reasons like this that make Orville the Star Trek series I've waited my whole life for.

I thought it was a good episode, though the stuff with the planet was more interesting and wish we had spent more time with the civilization there. But good episode.

Humorous to me to see how many people around were "triggered" by the homoerotic imagery with Bortus and the "holodeck."

Which.... It really isn't "homoerotic" considering Bortus's species only has one gender but, whatever...

Claire: "You have a porn addiction."
Bortus: "Is there an injection for that?"
Clyden: "You have had enough injections!"

Yeah. The B-plot was straight out of Voyager (technobabble included). The A-plot at least went somewhere that Trek never had the guts to go, for several reasons.

Indeed. As much as Star Wars is often derided for being fantasy with sci-fi trappings, Star Trek has often just been a workplace drama with sci-fi trappings. The Orville has been embracing this as a major part of Trek's legacy, while Discovery has run screaming from it.

Sweet emotions. I'd vote to see more Dann

That's another difference bw 'Orville' and 'Discovery.' We got to know secondary characters like Dann and Yaphit enough that we know their personalities and contributions to the 'Orville' crew.

On the other hand, we know little of Lt. Detmer from 'Discovery' other than 'she's the ship's pilot with Borg-like implants' although to be fair based on the trailers, the show runners might've planned to involved her, Owesakun, and Airiam more in S2.

Dann is great. I hope we see him in every episode.

So when are we going to see the elephant man alien who says "This is bitchin" in the previews?

I don’t know, but if that isn’t Patrick Warburton, I’ll eat my hat or a reasonable facsimile thereof.

Will it be a hat made from Patrick Warburton?
