They sort of look like Malachowski classes, but the nacelles are hanging down a lot lower, and the rear of the nacelles look almost round.

Who's to say it's not taken from later in the same episode?

Because it's nearly 1:1 identical, look at her position, and even the folds in her uniform.

Wow...those ships are tiny! Either that, or the Enterprise was built on the Abrams scale.

The DSC Enterprise is 442 meters long according to the VFX models. The Kelvin Enterprise is 725.

Those ships appear to be over 250 meters going by that.

It's most likely the exact same scene just a few moments or minutes later.
The two ships probably show up in the background while she's talking to whoever she's talking to.

I really want to know how big the Charon is

We’ve only got 2 points of reference, the shuttle-bay with shuttles, and when the Discovery flies through the centre, but both are at odd angles and really don’t help.

I think it was mentioned at some point that the Doomsday Machine was an inspiration for the Charon's design. Stands to reason that it's close to that size.

Definitely a Ptolemic move from the artists...

Not the exact FJ ship, of course, by virtue of scale already. But tugs ITRW come in all sizes while looking rather the same. It seems to me the front ends of the nacelles are sloped and either lacking ramscoops or having small ones (in the oOo config?) hidden beneath a sloped hood. But the aft end glow suggests Y-Wing style open trusswork and quite possibly a cylinder shape. The satisfactory whirr of backpedaling gets louder by the day...

That would indeed be cool. At least cosmetic alterations to the Enterprise that make her look a little more like she will in "Where No Man Has Gone Before(TOS)" eight years later. We don't know how incapacitated or damaged the Enterprise's systems are, only that Pike had to send out a distress call that was answered by Discovery.

It's not backpedalling, they're correcting Bryan Fuller's mistakes, there is a difference.

The tugs seem to have big beefy pylon supports on each nacelle and no neck coming down from the saucer. Their nacelles look more TOS-like. Each tug has two tractor beams emitting from the pylon areas. They might have a dish at the bottom of the saucer. They could be something like a Ptolemy class ship with beefy pylons and no central neck. A lot of squinting and imagination here. We shall see, soon.
