She sort of reminds me of Altaira Morbius in "Forbidden Planet".

^ Both are based on Miranda in Shakespeare's The Tempest.

Rayna reminded me more of Andrea than a genius far smarter than Spock.

Its easy for Rayna to say lets discuss n-dimensional space whatever with Spock but she never demonstrated that she was any "smarter" than anyone. She never showed any intellectual superiority and showed a lot of emotional immaturity.

So its difficult to see why Kirk fell madly in love with her in 5 minutes. Perhaps this shoild have been a double episode.

Anyone happen to know what they showed 50 years ago this week instead of Star Trek?

December 27 was a rerun of "The Enterprise Incident", January 3 was "Whom Gods Destroy".

The thing I never quite understood about Reyna in Requiem for Methuselah was that she was supposed to be human now rather than machine! Did they mean that her mechanical body had somehow transformed into flesh and blood instead of polymers and the like or were they speaking metaphysically?

Man, I forgot how listless this episode was. You know it's dull when you spend 51 minutes looking at Shatner's gut and think "I'm in 3rd season shape." Hence my diet. I packed on 15 over the holidays.

Yvonne Craig was, as always, very good. Steve Inhat did his best in the role and he's very compelling. The script made Spock very bland and quite dull. Shatner, as usual, was in there pitching, but I really only like this one for the fantastic fight at the end. They finally said "hey, let's get a stuntman with the same build as Shatner and put one of his wigs on him." Because it's his best double ever.

What was going on the week the episode aired.

It's kind of an awkward cheat that Spock gets stunned during the commercial.

This story is a bit of a conceptual mess...we have a legendary former Starship captain who can change shape and claims to have created the most powerful explosive in the universe? I was never sure how seriously to take Garth's boasts on that last bit of business--He is, after all, the very definition of an unreliable witness. And trying to get through the force field with the ship's phasers is more dangerous to the planet's inhabitants than somebody getting blown up by Garth's explosive right outside the window.

This episode gives us some indication of Kirk's background of having previously commanded another ship as detailed in TMOST. There's also strong indication that the Federation was meant to be a lot younger, though this would come to be disregarded. And Garth being described as the prototype Starship captain doesn't say a lot for any hypothetical starship captains from a century before Kirk's time....

    Very timely.

All these years, and I think that I only just noticed that Garth is wearing two different-colored boots.

Q: Where did Marta spend her vacation?
    A: All over Elba II!

    Next week: Speaking of riddles...
